My stomach clenched painfully at the thought of reading this book again. I couldn't remember exactly why, but I knew it was going to be bad. In fact, I put off reading this for a day or two, trying to mentally prepare myself for what was coming. It didn't work.
Bond’s BEA flight to Istanbul stops over in Rome, where he enjoys two Americanos. On the final leg of the flight, he drinks a couple of tumblers of ouzo with a mouthful of ice water. During dinner, he savours two dry martinis and half a bottle of Calvet claret.e. asexual (“Sexual neutrality was the essence of coldness in an individual”) --- but love to parade around naked. Romanova is described as “sexually neutral,” which is to say she will have sex with men but will not get emotionally involved, perfect for spy sex. She is also depicted as a stone-cold killer who has a “perfect body,” of course. We are expected to believe a well- trained SMERSH agent sees Bond, forgets everything she is supposed to do, and actually melts her ice-cold flesh into his arms, of course. But we have seen Bond played by Sean Connery in the film version, so we can see why anyone might sleep with him! We know what he would do with frigid women, make them into fireballs! [14] [29] He also knew of the story of Eugene Karp and his journey on the Orient Express: Karp was a US naval attaché and intelligence agent based in Budapest who, in February 1950, took the Orient Express from Budapest to Paris, carrying a number of papers about blown US spy networks in the Eastern Bloc. Soviet assassins were already on the train. The conductor was drugged and Karp's body was found shortly afterwards in a railway tunnel south of Salzburg. From Russia with Love Ultimate Edition, Disc 1 From Russia With Love is my favourite James Bond movie, simply because it is the first Bond I ever saw at the cinema. This was at the old Classic in Hendon Central in London, some time in the early 1970s, in an era before Bond films were shown on television, and going to see them at the cinema was a special school-holiday treat. Quite long-in-the-tooth Bond films would be revived on the big screen like this: this was a double bill of From Russia With Love (1963) and Thunderball (1965).

Fleming resurrected his hero with a deus ex machina at the start of Dr No– inventing a previously unmentioned ‘specialist in tropical medicine’ staying at the hotel where Klebb stabbed Bond. The doctor stabilised Bond, giving his friends time to get him to a hospital.
Once the action moves from Istanbul to the Orient Express, the plot is non stop action. Fleming creates premise after premise with a large cast of characters so there never is a loss for plot development or new adventures for Bond to get embroiled in. Gleaning from his own experience as a spy during World War II, Fleming's stories are accurate and detailed, not just a plot of action upon action. Of course there is the action and the scrapes that James Bond walks away unscathed from, but there are also scenes in which Fleming pays close attention to detail, making the buildup all the more thrilling.

Boothroyd's suggestions came too late to be included in From Russia, with Love, but one of the guns—a .38 Smith & Wesson snubnosed revolver modified with one third of the trigger guard removed—was used as the model for Chopping's image.
