About this deal

What’s surprising about their mats is that there are so many to choose from with between 8cm and 11cm of sleeping comfort. Choose from lightweight 1 and 2 season sleeping bags for warmer nights, 3 and 4 season sleeping bags for cooler evenings and 5 season sleeping bags for extremely cold climates. Treat yourself to the Campstar Midi, with a 100mm thickness self-inflating mattress, which is designed to take the hard work away from putting up your sleeping area, with a lightweight great quality fabric, which is soft to touch.

On the other hand, simple foam camping mats are both much cheaper and more robust than inflatable models. They also pack down smaller when not in use, so they’re the best choice for backpackers and wild campers. Losing a halfpoint for the slightly slippery outer fabric, the Trekology is an excellent SIM option for those on a budget and comes highly recommended. If you want to guarantee a great night's sleep under the stars, make sure you take a good quality camping pillow with you on your next trip.

Whether you're heading out on a long hike or taking the kids away to your favourite campsite, a Decathlon vacuum flask will keep you refreshed as you explore your new surroundings. Kelty reckons its new waypoint is its “biggest and softest” pad yet, and at 76cm wide and a generous 8cm of height, we wouldn’t disagree. A couple of these together give a highly flexible campsite sleeping option, especially if placed on camp beds.Personally I would plump for the XL if you find you have a choice of sizes – it just gives that extra bit of surface area for a nice sprawl when sleeping, and for not much extra weight. It uses a novel ‘wave-like’ top surface layer to provide a tactile 150D surface to lie on and hold your sleeping bag in position. The Vango Trek Pro 3 Compact mat is ideal for those who care about the environment when they are exploring as its made from recycled TrekEco® Fabric.

Well actually we didn’t really miss those extra 2cm, and the great insulation really made a difference on a cold autumn night. One specification we’ve been unable to find out is the R-Factor and as a result we would recommend always using it on a camp bed base. The valve has also been designed so that when you deflate you’re not fighting against the air rushing in. Free yourself from the faff of foot pumps on your next camping holiday with a self-inflating double mat. They’re basicin design, and a little heavy, with a shiny surface and a single valve, but they seem fast to inflate and the 10cm one we tried was comfortable. Definitely recommended if packing space is not an issue for you or if you need that extra 5cm of cushioning (anyone over 15 stone we would say), but it's easily the most expensive option on offer here. So a high R-Value means that the heat that your body generates and escapes through your sleeping bag onto one side of the mat will not get through to the ground. That being said, they are less comfortable and you’ll still feel the ground underneath you which is definitely worth taking into consideration.

If one of you wants to go camping on your own or with the kids then you don’t need to try and wrestle with the larger SIM. These types of mats are not really our recommendations for campsite camping relaxation and will be examined in a separate article.

While it isn’t quite self-inflating, despite its name, it does only take a few puffs to get Snugpak’s XL mat ready, and a foam layer adds welcome comfort and warmth as well as protecting you if you stretch out on rockier terrain. Overall the Andes 10cm is an excellent choice for campers on a budget, and we think it is the best value double self inflating mattress. With a sleeping mat under your sleeping bag, the ground will feel more even and create an additional layer of insulation between your body and the ground.
