About this deal

Leading Ladies can be happy without a man. Ashton is concerned that his career is also over after his final telenovela character was killed off. He will get the chance to showcase his acting skills to American audiences and catch the attention of Hollywood casting directors by joining this different cast as a last-minute addition. He’ll need to create a smokin’ hot on-screen connection with Jasmine for it to work. It’s easier said than done, especially when a poor first impression extinguishes any sexual fire they may have had. When Laurie and Jamie started fake dating, I was so here for it. They became friends and I loved how vulnerable they were with each other and how they grew to really appreciate each other. It was so cute how Laurie had this growing crush on Jamie but didn't know what to do about it. And did I mention this book was British? It definitely has the British quirk that I love in my British books. Logan and Mason Kade, two brothers, each followed their own path. They anticipated to enroll in her school, Fallen Crest Academy, and they were wealthy. They choose a public school, therefore Samantha is now made to stay with them. She doesn’t give a damn about them, her friends, her unfaithful boyfriend, or even her parent’s divorce, which is the problem. But perhaps that’s for the best. Change might be a positive thing. I plummeted into chaos because your love was everything beautiful and pure, but my love was everything deceitful and destructive. So, I didn’t just fall in love with you, Killian. I crawled, on my knees, bleeding for you. So, it was real. Every moment, every smile, every kiss… it was real and it hurt.”

There is really lovely humour throughout the book plus a dash of wit, a smidge of sarcasm and a dollop of lol! The conversations between all the characters have a genuine feel of authenticity which I really like. The story is well paced, it feels fresh and current which the Manchester setting adds to. I think the author has been very clever with her choice of locations as they match the personalities. Manchester is a vibrant, exciting and fun, young city and so it’s a great environment for the unfolding romantic comedic drama. Lincoln where Jamie’s lovely parents live, is a beautiful old city with great history just as his parents have.Laurie is with Dan. A man that is reliable, safe and her partner for life until Dan announces he is in love with someone else who is also pregnant with his child. Sad, alone and reeling from the breakup, Laurie slowly falls for the office heartthrob Jamie as a relationship of convenience turns into something else completely different that neither Laurie or Jamie were expecting.

There’s nothing wrong with your daughter, Mrs. McIntosh. I said we’re not sleeping together. I didn’t say I didn’t want to.” So many secrets. So much pain. Loneliness and fear… There was just something in them that screamed, don’t abandon me; keep me together.” It’s downright brilliant, really, from a characterization standpoint. But not so much from an EPIC ROMANCE UNFORGETTABLE LOVE STORY UNPUTDOWNABLE EMOTIONAL NARRATIVE one. Once again McFarlane writing combines laugh-out-loud moments with an insightful narrative that taps into deep-seated issues. Blending humour and realism McFarlane's story is as witty as it is topical. Review: As we’ve talked about ad nauseam here at SFOL, it’s been hard to concentrate on reading right now. (…I have no idea why that could be.) Enter, British rom com books! I’ve read a few lately ( see some ideas for Comfort Reads here), and Mhairi McFarlane’s are among some of my favorites. The Full Potter,” he repeated. “Not finding out you’re a witch until you’re older, not growing up with it. ‘Yer a witch, Vivi,’ the sort of thing.”

Look, its a bit of a cliched story-line. Pretend to be a couple and then the feelings and romantic tension begins to build and build. Yes it has been done a million times before, but McFarlane makes it work. It’s always been you, Caro. The first time I saw you, I thought you were the most beautiful girl that I’d ever seen. I thought you must be a princess like Cinderella. It’s only ever been you.” Our protagonist, and narrator, is Laurie, a thirty-six year old lawyer. Her world collapses when her partner of eighteen years leaves her. Having spent half of her life with Dan, and not knowing why he no longer wants to be with her, Laurie is hurt and confused. Worst still, Dan works at the same firm as Laurie so she is forced to keep up a happy front at work.
