About this deal

Remember, when you are not driving you are a pedestrian, so treat the crossings with care and attention, and follow the appropriate safety rules. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie.

Paul Watson, Chairman of Road Safety GB North East said “School Crossing Patrols provide an invaluable service, escorting children and adults across busy roads to school safely. Drivers who put the lives of children or patrols at risk must be dealt with, and will be reported to the Police”By the 1950s, more and more councils were recruiting ‘lollipoppers’ to keep youngsters safe on their way to the classroom.

In 2000, a change in law meant crossing patrols were no longer a legal requirement for schools, which led to a reduction in numbers nationally. SCP cuts have prompted campaigns to save the school crossing patrols, with some success. For example, 2017 saw Liverpool council reverse the decision to cut crossing patrols outside schools after protests by schools, parents and children.

Save our lollipop people

However, one of the most significant barriers for children walking to school is crossing the road safely. Parents with older children who could potentially walk to school will be reassured by the presence of an SCP who will watch out for the children at the most dangerous part of their journey, namely crossing the road. They know that the SCP is both authorised to stop traffic and trained not to lead children across until it is completely safe. It may have changed the law so that a patroller had the authority to stop the traffic for any pedestrian - which included both parents and children - but it also meant that school crossing patrol operatives were no longer a legal requirement for schools. Along with the school crossing patrol road sign, you may have also spotted a flashing amber light too. These are turned on and off manually at the times the crossing is in operation.

And while the operatives themselves have decreased, there has been a reported increase in aggressive behaviour towards them by drivers, prompting many to be issued with cameras. Hotjar sets this cookie to identify a new user’s first session. It stores a true/false value, indicating whether it was the first time Hotjar saw this user.

Alan Kennedy, National Chairman or Road Safety GB gives the campaign his full support. He said, “Thankfully, the majority of drivers in the region are courteous and stop when requested to, but it is vital that each and every driver complies with the law to ensure we keep our children, and our excellent and dedicated staff safe”

According to the latest figures issued by the GMB union, there were 7,128 employed by councils across England, Scotland and Wales in 2009/10 and by 2017/18 that had dropped to 5,047. The West Midlands and the North West were the worst-hit regions, with drops of 386 and 378 respectively, while Wales had 250 fewer school crossing patrol officers, with Scotland losing 163 We all lead busy lives,' says Dr Rachel Lee, 'but no matter how much of a hurry you are in it's important to show patience and allow children to get to school safely.' Paul went on to say, “Our School Crossing Patrol staff do a marvellous job in all weather conditions, and the verbal abuse and intimidation they suffer is unbelievable. We have even had some staff assaulted, for simply doing their job. Of course, any such incidents are reported to the Police” And parents and carers who are accompanying children on their walk to school very much appreciate SCPs as well, particularly if they are pushing a buggy or have younger children with them and need extra time to cross the road.' Again, failure to do so is an offence under the 1984 Road Traffic Act and your libel for prosecution and a fine.

Why choose the Pulsa LED?

Originally the police ran the School Crossing Patrol service but in 1974 it was transferred to local authorities and in 2000 SCPs were authorised to help adults as well as children cross the road. The law states that when a patrol raises their sign - even if they have not yet stepped out into the road - a driver must be prepared to stop. Once the patrol is on the road and displaying the sign drivers MUST stop and not proceed until the patrol and any accompanying children or adults have cleared the road. In Shropshire there is a small but dedicated team of crossing patrol wardens who, come rain, hail or snow, help children and families get to and from school in safety. A new Freedom of Information Request to the DVLA from leading UK vehicle leasing firm Select Car Leasing found 13 prosecutions for TS60 violations in the last three years alone, hitting a peak in 2019 when four drivers were collared. Once the traffic is stopped in both directions, the patrol will step into the middle of the road and will assist the children/adults to cross To stop the traffic the patrol person will lift their stop sign (the lollipop) and cause the traffic to stop. You must obey this sign. If you do not stop this is an offence and remember, there are children involved, so be sensible.
