About this deal

Gardens, Nature Reserves and the Coast were the main habitats and quite a few of the native plants were captured too! Over 1,500 species are illustrated with detailed photographs chosen for their help in identification. You can’t expect any more, and for all but the most demanding of observers it will reliably get you to the point of knowing what the species is or at least knowing ‘it’s either this or something very similar’ which will probably do. It is a ‘must have’ for everyone with a general interest in insects and I’m sure it will sneak into the libraries of quite a few seasoned experts too!

The key birds and insects (dragonflies and butterflies) cover most of the talk but ‘occasional’ visitors and some wild flowers get a mention.I keep a County yearlist every year and aim to see at least 160 species (with as many as possible photographed! This code links to a sound recording of the species of interest, an app will be needed on your phone to read this. There are too many species of birds included to mention here and whet your appetite, simply sit back and enjoy the sheer spectacle these islands can produce! You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Each of the 1,600 species accounts offers a photograph of the insect, distribution map and brief notes on size, ID characters, habitat, food plants, distribution and similar species.

Using images to note the key identification criteria, in theory at least, it should be possible to correctly identify those problem birds, with some - even from a distance. A follow up talk on this most charismatic bird of prey and is recommended after first enjoying 'Shropshire's Magnificent Peregrines'. This includes the more obscure groups, such as stick insects, lice and even the newly discovered webspinners.Brock’s Britain’s Insects: A Field Guide to the Insects of Great Britain and Ireland manages to side step many of these problems. It’s the only one I will need to take with me on holidays and insect-spotting trips and ganders in the countryside. My overall feeling is that Britain's insects is very good value for money but should be regarded as an introduction to the subject. A comprehensive book packed with rich colour photos and infographics that explains all the main wasp families in detail . A similar talk to 'Birding through a lens' but dealing with a wide variety of wildlife found in the UK.

This book is ideal for anyone interested in insects but not wanting to restrict themselves to a particular group. I was on a lecture tour and these are the moments spent birding in this fantastic west coast area of Canada! This new and expanded edition – the most complete guide to insects ever published – now has 544 pages and covers over 2300 species with updated maps and over 2900 colour photographs, fully comprehensive sections on all insect groups, including beetles (108 pages), flies (100 pages), ants, bees and wasps (86 pages). But I think it is likely to be kept downstairs, handy for rushing out into the garden for a quick attempt to identify a striking looking species of something or other. I realise that I haven’t seen an earwig for ages and now I know there are 7 British species but 3 of them are introduced and two of them are now probably extinct in the UK. Using images (taken under schedule 1 licence) the focus is on the 2010 breeding season capturing the development of chicks from day 1 to fledging.
