About this deal

If you want the truth, I very much hope that this whole virus thing will be over before I’ve written too many chapters and I can stop and bring out the whole book at some time in the future (with all author profits going to support our brilliant NHS.) His first TV gig was on Robin of Sherwood, the 80s reinterpretation of the Robin Hood myth that added a generous dollop of pagan mysticism. With its theme tune by Clannad, it retains a cult following to this day. This book is a debut by this author, so there wasn't any history to rely on. What I will say is that the author should continue in his work, because he tells a really good tale.

Anthony Horowitz has announced he will share the writing process of his new Diamond Brothers book, Where Seagulls Dare, with children online. There are traps, near death experiences, twists, cable cars, bulldogs, and gags coming out of Tim's dim ears. Horowitz found himself in the news a couple of weeks ago when, at the Hay Festival, he criticised “cancel culture” and the culture of fear he believes it engenders. Can you tell me one newspaper story of the last 10 weeks that hasn’t been about Boris Johnson’s survival or Boris Johnson’s dishonesty or Boris Johnson’s partying? I’m so fed up with those two words that even speaking to you now and using them makes me feel slightly nauseous.” Where Seagulls Dare is the eighth in Horowitz’s Diamond Brothers series – gag-filled detective stories for children The story is based in the world of salmon farming, murder, intrigue and suspense. It looked promising, but sadly it didn't live up to expectation. I can recognise that some of the characters are mash-ups and exaggerated elements of people the author has worked with. Tony on the other hand is inspired by the real life anti-salmon farming campaigner and some might say unhinged, Don Staniford. Go on, Google him, you know you want to. Cullen takes much influence from the thoughts and dry humour of the author himself. These factors helped keep my interest throughout the book, but was it enough?

Tony’s a cold fish… and no missed hake! Tony Stafford, a slippery eco-protester, is hired by a scheming Russian salmon farmer to batter his competitors. The Russian wants to keep his friends close but his anemones closer while Tony, rising to the bait, ditches his current girlfriend, Kim, for an old High School sole mate starring in panto. Or more is the case that they have already spent most of the money they have been paid to find Alistair. When you are told by your teachers that you are no good at anything and you are feeling lonely and worthless, to discover you actually have a skill is very important,” he says. “For me, that skill was telling stories, which I did in the dormitory after lights out. It was always the same story, really. Two boys at the school escape every night and go off and have an adventure of some sort.” He is certainly prolific. So much so that he’s not entirely certain how many books he’s written. It may be “54 or 55,” he says. He is the author of the bestselling Alex Rider series, often described as James Bond for YA readers. But he has also written, with the blessing of the Fleming estate, three very well-received Bond novels. The most recent of those, With a Mind to Kill, was published in May.

More books for age 7+

With the police trawling for suspects, Cullen hopes to smoke Tony out while Big Paul grills one of the Russian’s henchmen. Meanwhile a shoal of outrageous characters glimmer in the shallows and loom from the depths in this hilarious crime farce. Endlessly light-hearted and ludicrous, this pair are perfect for KS2 and KS3 readers who like fast-paced stories with mysteries and jokes. There are Alex Rider references for Horowitz fans too. Would love to see this made into a TV series. The author Anthony Horowitz, is very kind hearted, as all the royalties from this book are going to charity Suffolk Home Start that supports children and families across the country. But I’m doing it in a very different way. Normally when you read one of my stories, I may have written it half a dozen times. It’s been edited. All the spelling mistakes (and unnecessary violence) have been taken out. It’s been put into a nice cover with illustrations beside the text. It is, in other words, a book.

It is upsetting for me to have reached a point where I realise I was wrong all that time because we’ve arrived at a government that calls itself Conservative but which I, like many people, am unable to recognise,” he says. “I can’t understand how the Cabinet and the Prime Minister can pretend to be espousing Tory values – the values I thought I believed in – yet are doing so many awful things. In Where Seagulls Dare, right-wing politicians are the villains. It is a type of politics that is divisive, aggressive, dishonest and ineffective and, in the long term, useless to the future of this country. The Conservative Party now is only inward-looking. It talks about the country and what people want but actually, all the Conservative Party is about is the Conservative Party. I'm a big fan of the Diamond Brothers detective series so I was very happy when a new adventure was published - the first novel since South by South East (1991) and the first story of any length since The Greek Who Stole Christmas (2007). The proceeds of this new book are going to charity. In the meantime, though, I hope you’ll enjoy the story…even with the typos and the speling mistakes. You can let me know what you think as I continue – and it’s even possible I may have to ask for help. In this episode, there's a tech genius missing in action and the Diamond brothers want to solve the case - the only trouble is that they're being hounded by a gang who aren't much fun to be bothered by. It is investigative fiction at it's most fun - you'll have to suspend your disbelief, but you had to for Scooby Doo too and that was always a winner!
