I believe that starting the story with Steven at the party and exploring his reasons for leaving would have enhanced the overall reading experience. I feel that It would have allowed for a more engaging introduction to the characters and their relationships, as well as built anticipation and suspense leading up to Steven's disappearance. Overemotional is a refreshingly entertaining and enjoyable read by debut author David Fenne and I loved it. From the revelation at the start through unexpected twists and turns to the climatic ending - I was hooked all the way through! The story started at pace and didn't stop and took me on a roller-coaster ride of emotions as revelations and discoverers were made and the danger increased. The various chase scenes through the town and the escape from the hotel left me breathless! Short chapters told from different characters point of view and the occasional change in format also helped keep up the pace of his book. I find Steven’s voice the easiest because he’s the most similar to me, but I love Troy. He’s so earnest, polite, and optimistic in everything he does, and his fish-out-of-water point of view (being an American in the UK) is a great comedic vein to mine. He’s such a golden retriever that you can’t help but love him. The winners of The Farshore Reading for Pleasure Teacher Awards 2023, highlighting the work schools are doing to encourage a love of reading, have... A very intense read. Steven moves alone to a new town after a life-changing event happens due to his superpowers. However, his friends Troy and Freya along with Freya's boyfriend, Marcus follow him.

This is going to be a trilogy and my new obsession. Just trust me on this one guys, it's really good. This is the story of a teenage boy named Steven Percival , who is known as `Percy' to his close friends and family. Steven is seventeen years old and he has a gift that he does not want. This is because whenever he has strong emotions about anything, strange things begin to happen around him. This gift affects his friends and other people close by because it makes them behave strangely. He also fears that he may have accidently killed another young man because of his powers. This is why he runs away to a small seaside town called Grunsby-On-Sea because he thinks that nobody will look for him there.

July 2023 book club recommendations

Personally I would like it if this book was turned into a TV Show. If it ever does I would definitely go and watch it. I am anticipating the opportunity to revisit this book upon its release and intend to acquire both a physical copy and an audible version to fully immerse myself in the story. Now, I have not seen any reviewers give spoilers for the whole book on IF this fully occurs or not, there is another love interest (is the only love interest???), Troy, who is the same age as the MC and I love him to bits. An epically exciting, utterly unique debut. Not to be missed.” - William Hussey (author of Broken Hearts & Zombie Parts) Seventeen-year-old Steven has a big problem… Whenever he feels intense emotions, weird things happen. Like when he kissed a boy for the first time, and the boy’s head literally exploded. Hey did you hear? Steven Percival is a low-budget superhero who might kill you if he laughs too hard."

These hashtag days might provide current and relevant talking points for secondary-aged pupils aged 13+ in KS3, KS4 and KS5, especially when linked to related literature. Writing comedy is notoriously difficult, but the voices were full of humour, was it difficult to balance jokes with tension? There are many povs (mainly 3 for now, I do not count Marcus) but it does not feel like too much, and we get to meet every character not only through a filter (the main character or the narrator) but by being into each of their thoughts. This book is advertised as "wholesome", and has no content warnings. Yet this book covers topics such as illegal experimentation on pregnant women, eugenics, creatures and gore fit for horror stories, kidnapping and drugging, sexual assault of a minor, and whatever else is in the part of the book I didn't read.

That was amazing. Fantastic story with great world-building. I love the idea of magic manifesting through emotions. I was a bit skeptical at first if this concept is strong enough or it'll fizzle out halfway through the book. It didn't. The author clearly put a lot of thought into it an came up with a lot of ideas for it. I do find the descriptions a little much, however that’s probably because the author needs to illustrate the layout of his story. I tend to not read the synopsis before I read a book, however I found the last chapter just about wrap it up and thought to myself whether David was giving himself room for a sequel. Then I read the blurb and found out this is the 1st of a trilogy. Edit: I haven't stopped thinking about this book so it's gone up .5 a star to perfection :) stay mad Seventeen-year-old Steven has a big problem... OVEREMOTIONAL: your new queer YA obsession! by David Fenne

This book is like "Carry On" meets "The Extraordinaries" meets "The Infinite Noise", and I am not complaining. The close-knit friendship between Freya and Steven and the setting reminded me of Carry On (since both books are set in the UK), the emotional manifestations were similar to those in The Infinite Noise, whereas the awkward/uncertain moments in Steven's life and the overall twists were a lot like The Extraordinaries. These similarities just made me want to re-read all of those books again 😭 It's most comparable to Carry On, not only in terms of that British humour (which I loved), but the fact that it's going to be a trilogy like Simon Snow, and the resemblance to its UK cover is uncanny! It’s not long before things start to spiral out of control, with Steven and his friends drawn into something much bigger than themselves. They must figure out who can be trusted and who is not all that they seem. Another fave was rookie Agent Wren, whose enthusiasm leads to more than one awkward (but highly entertaining) conversation with her supervisor—trust me, it’s pretty much impossible not to find her antics a little amusing.

As exciting and interesting as the synopsis was for this, I'm afraid I didn't love it as much as I would've wanted to. It was not horrible by any means-quite far from that.
