About this deal

I read this book for my book club, Bookish Babes of Norfolk. If you guys are living in Norfolk, VA and are looking for a club to join, I recommend them. Now a successful photographer living under the name Naomi Carson, she has found a place that calls to her, thousands of miles away from everything she’s ever known. Naomi wants to embrace the solitude, but the residents of Sunrise Cove keep forcing her to open up―especially the determined Xander Keaton.

OBSESSION starts out with Carly and Rob, a seemingly perfect couple, who have far too much to drink one night. Carly asks Rob who is person would be, if he had the opportunity to be with another woman. Unfortunately for everyone in this novel, Rob answers her. She rescues a stray dog, lately on named Tag for obvious reasons, who adds a nice touch to the story. Carly and Rob have the perfect marriage. Or so they think. When they are both tipsy Carly asks Rob who he’d be interested in if he could have anyone else and he says their mutual friend Jenni. Nicole takes us through what one could only imagine, a brief insight to being stalked, the fear and anxiety of not knowing what's coming for you or your family.I do not want to say to much, if anything, about the plot which is unusual for me but this one I do believe is one best gone into blind or at least knowing as little as possible. Profound, Insightful and Daunting, "Obsession" was a Gripping and Inspiring True Story of @bynicolemadigan and her Personal Ordeal of being stalked for over three years. I hated pretty much everyone. I can handle an unlikeable character but Jenni was just vile in every way. I don’t think it’s wrong for an author to write outside his or her experience. I just want to see it done with care, as to not hurt the society it influences or the people who’ve survived it.

Her newest hardcover release Come Sundown will be out at the end of May – sooooon!!!! I can’t wait to read it. The blurb sounds amazing, the story plays on a resort ranch in Montana (would love to go there on a vacation) – again the topic is right up my alley. When I heard about Obsession, I ran to get my hands on a copy. I had the best intentions to read it before meeting Nicole and hearing her talk about it at the Sydney lunch at @betterreadbookshop, but when the time came, I had not been able to read much of it. Hearing Nicole talking about her experience was entirely enthralling, and it was an utter pleasure to meet her in person and get my book signed. After that, I had the best possible encouragement to make room for Obsession. And I am so glad I did. A gripping blend of memoir, investigation and expert analysis, Obsession takes a deep dive into the disturbing phenomenon of stalking. Naomi can feel her defenses failing, and knows that the connection her new life offers is something she’s always secretly craved. But as she’s learned time and again, her past is never more than a nightmare away. Also, while reading this book, I didn't really see how it was considered a psychological thriller until more than halfway through the book. Even then, I wouldn't have labeled it a thriller. It didn't keep me on the edge of my seat like The Couple Next Door. It didn't make me want to know how the ending would play out. I just knew who I hated, and I didn't care what happened to them. They were stupid, and they purposely did stupid things and had the audacity to not understand why things were starting to go wrong.

How to Vote

Naomi was only 12 years old when she saved a young woman from one of the most notorious serial killers the country has ever known. He was also her father. As an adult now, Naomi moves from place to place and hasn't been able to settle down because people find out her true identity - as the daughter of a monster. When she decides to buy a house in Sunrise Cove she finally thinks she has found a place to call home... But there is a new killer out there, and he has his sights set on Naomi.

H rating: 3.5 stars. Xander. I don't think we got into his character as much as I'd have liked -- it felt kind of surface level, but what I did get I liked! I really enjoyed the writing style, as well. It was comfortable, easy to read and engaging. The author does a good job of "showing" instead of telling throughout her personal experience but reverts to a journalistic style of writing, which I greatly appreciated. She's not claiming to be the subject matter expert, but is sharing her findings in her quest for knowledge. Naomi Bowes was only eleven years old when she followed her father out into the woods on a rainy night and discovered the terrible secret he was concealing in the root cellar. After she rescues Ashley, preventing her from becoming the next in a long line of victims, her life is upended. As always, Nora Roberts does a fabulous job examining the psychological impact on the family. What would it be like to live knowing you had a relative who has done unspeakable things? Some relatives react by pulling together. Others fall apart. This was my favorite section of the novel. The story is presented from each of the four character's P.O.V. The chapters are short, but the book is long. Get ready to go in deep. Scandalous, frightening innermost thoughts are revealed and it's not pretty. Downright uncomfortable. I find it so fascinating to compare a person's thoughts with their contrasting behavior.

This book does contain some very sensitive subjects and lots of sexual themes so approach with caution!I also found the story in general made me feel uneasy if not at times uncomfortable which is exactly what a great physiological thriller should do! Warning: I'm not being vulgar or anything bad, but this book made me angry and I may be itsy bitsy sarcastic. I tried to leave the emotion out of it, but the longer I wrote, the more it showed. I may come to this review and make it more presentable in later days, months or years, but I wouldn't count on it. Occasionally, Karissa will post an image with a vague reference to me. They are too subtle for me to report, but I take screenshots anyway. Thank you, Nicole, for sharing your story and putting a voice out for a lot of other people who have also been a victim to stalking. It turns into a game of cat and mouse or more like python and a mouse (if you read the book, you'll get this). All in all, without more spoilers, it is one of the great books to read about obsessions and delusions. None of the parties is 100% innocent but one is slightly better than other and you hope that it wins.
