About this deal

Update 5/19/23: The first official pictures of miniatures for this expansion have finally been revealed here.! I hope you enjoyed my ramblings about this new HeroQuest Expansion. Let me know your thoughts on this newest HeroQuest expansion in the comments. Now, Avalon Hill and Hasbro have announced Heroquest Rise of the Dread Moon, a brand new expansion for the board game. Notably, this is the first new retail expansion for the game in thirty years. Heroquest Rise of the Dread Moon announcement I also realized that because of the close quarters in the fairly small HeroQuest rooms, it’s actually a bit more difficult than I originally thought to get the full perk from adjacent monsters when casting Channel Dread. Crafting can only happen at specific times. In between quests, or in the presence of an Alchemist’s Bench. This is interesting, now furniture finally has a purpose other than just sitting there, looking pretty. Don’t get me wrong, it still looks pretty, but it’s nice to have some interaction now.

So far, I really like what I’ve seen from this expansion. Avalon Hill seems to have delivered a really decent product with an interesting story. Anyways, I took some time to playtest this guy against a party of brave heroes. Let’s see how it went. What’s Scarier, Spells or a Sword?! The Barbarian is still in the grips of Fear, especially after seeing his friend die. Rage is starting to creep in, but he can’t move enough to engage the Wraith.

Well, nobody died… this time. They did come out a little worse for wear though. The Barbarian lost half his Body Points, and the Wizard lost a spell that could have been useful later on it the quest. The action of Crafting itself, is specifically a Wizard action, though it is possible for other Heroes to craft by using a Reagent Kit. I like this new mechanic, if gives the Wizard a new unique ability, similar to the Dwarfs innate ability to disarm traps without a Trap Kit. The Wraith, seeing the Barbarian as it’s biggest threat, casts Fear on him then floats past him and through the corridor. First off, in this post we finally get an official size for the Barbarian. He’s 6’7″, that’s huge! No wonder he plows through goblins like they’re not even there!

So, this new minion of Zargon has a sword, a shield, and the power to cast Ball of Flame, and Tempest once per quest. Edit: Confirmed this is NOT an "alternate cover" to an existing project (Mage of the Mirror or otherwise) or a remake of a legacy product but something "completely new." If this is your first time hearing about Rise of the Dread Moon, this is an expansion for the HeroQuest Game System and requires the game system to play. A Note to the Development Team Some of us were hoping for some range with this enemy, but I almost think this is better. We already have the archer to give us range, the Assassin fills in the gap for the close range and diagonals. Heroquest Rise of the Dread Moon announcement

Finally free Elethorn from Zargon’s vile clutches! The cards and Quest Book in this fantasy-filled HeroQuest expansion feature artwork that immerses you in the perilous adventure Our wizard has been hard at work brewing potions to help our heroes meet the challenge of the Dread Moon. You will see some old favorite elixirs, but without previous hero limitations.

Thanks to the efforts of a very dedicated fan on the HeroQuestFans Discord server, Eudoxio, they were able to get us a closer look at this image by running it through some up-scaling software to extrapolate some of the blurred out features. The value of some potion reagents has fluctuated in this war-torn economy, so you may see some changes to the gold coin value of some of our potions.Yesterday the Prequel Quest "Knightfall" was posted online. This is the one that has all those sold out GenCon sessions. It is being recommended to play first, but as many have pointed out, it seems worded towards beginner players, and yet at the same time doesn't serve to fully equip a team of basic heroes for the beginning of ROTDM (which has a difficulty comparable to KK/ROTWL or Prophecy of Telor/Spirit Queen's Torment, at first glance). Update 6/20/23: Re-upload of HQF latest video covering the flood of new photos from Zavvi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQHUHknJE4U Speaking of a travelling merchant, we have Strangers. It’s possible that one of these Stranger tokens could be used as a merchant for the Underground Market in a Hideout. Strangers are described as “people who are not clearly friend or foe…”, this could mean anything. We’ll have to wait and see how this is used in the quests. Mercenaries & Reputation

HeroQuest was a smash hit for tabletop gaming, as well as becoming a gateway to tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons for millions of players. The game also influenced later tabletop board games that came after, including Games Workshop’s own Warhammer Quest, board games based on D&D, and recent games such as Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. For the Dread Wraith, I’ve got an Air Elemental. The actual mini appears to take up 2 spaces, I’ll try to emulate this as best as possible, my Air Elemental takes up 4 spaces, similar to The Frozen Horror. The Dread Cultist will be subbed in for my Crimson Courtiers from Altar Quest. For the Assassin, I’ll be using the Cutpurse, also from Altar Quest. Playtest #1: Dread Wraith, Cultist, & Specters One thing I find particularly interesting about the Mercenaries is the fact that the Cadre of the Raven’s Veil isn’t mentioned in the rules portion of the Quest Book, nor is it a part of the story at the beginning, during Mentor’s message. Hopefully the Cadre becomes a bigger part of the story during the quests. Alchemy & Potions Unable to move due to the tempest swirling around them, the Barbarian and Guardian Knight sit tight for this round. The Elf moves to strike the Specter assaulting her friend, the Wizard, and manages to take it out in one swing of her sword. The Wizard, visibly shaken by the encounter, remains still for this round. On the topic of the Plaza, I want to also talk about the Hideout. This is a tile that acts as a safe haven for the Heroes. While in a hideout, the Heroes may recover some Body/Mind Points. They can also use the Alchemist’s Bench to craft potions from ingredients. As we know, crafting materials will be available to create potions. How will this work and how to our Heroes collect these materials. The Rise of Dread Moon expansion features 10 quests, as well as full-color tiles and 58 game cards, set in an elven world of monsters, traps, treasure, and Dread Moon spells The Wraith screeches and casts Summon Specters bringing 1 new monster into the battle. The Spell effect doesn’t say where to place the Specter, so I’ll place it as close to the Wraith as possible. The Wraith then retreats THROUGH the Heroes, maintaining line of sight. The new Specter moves into position, where the Wraith was between the Cultists and casts Channel Dread at the Barbarian. The two adjacent Cultists also know this spell, so that adds 2 to the result of 6, totaling 8. The Barbarian takes 2 damage. Each Cultists also casts Channel Dread at the Barbarian, with +1 each. The first rolled a 1, but the second rolled 5. With the +1, the Barbarian takes another 2 damage. The Cultists have exhausted their Channel Dread spells though. Thinking that they can bolster the Specter’s Dread, the Cultists choose to remain at its side. HeroQuest: Rise of the Dead Moon is an immersive and thrilling fantasy board game that takes players on an epic journey through a world filled with dark magic, sinister creatures, and ancient mysteries. Developed as a modern adaptation of the classic HeroQuest board game, Rise of the Dead Moon promises to captivate both nostalgic fans and newcomers alike with its engaging gameplay and rich storytelling.
