About this deal

The midrange projects well, and carries enough detail to make dialogue sound characterful – there’s enough space around a speaker’s voice to allow them to communicate fully, even if they’re whispering. There’s good balance and poise to midrange information, a very pleasant kind of naturalness that makes voices both convincing and easy to follow. The Samsung HW-Q800B is a well-appointed and highly capable soundbar that’s sure to please fans looking for a big, cinematic delivery. The soundstage is understandably front-heavy, but there’s plenty of width, height and scale to the presentation. The subwoofer is excellent, although some tweaking may be required to ensure its bass doesn’t over-power the rest of the system. The soundbar is where all the physical inputs and wireless connectivity live – the subwoofer just has a power lead (and not a long one, it’s worth noting) and a button to initiate pairing with the soundbar in the unlikely event that the process doesn’t happen automatically. The Samsung HW-700B is a great all-rounder entertainer. It’s able to deliver crisp dialogue (which has long been a strong point of Samsung’s better bars), but can slam hard when the action demands it. It can also cut a rug with streamed Bluetooth music.

We found this two-piece impressively cinematic (straight from the box, and not augmented with any Q-Symphony embellishment). The subwoofer does a fine job filling out the lower mid-range and adding gutty thumps. It doesn’t drop excessively deep, but explosions and gunfire sound reassuringly sharp and dynamic. On the top of the soundbar are a couple more of these drivers, angled up and out in an effort to create some of that sonic height that’s the reason we all got excited by Dolby Atmos in the first place. The subwoofer’s side-firing driver is bolstered by a forward-facing reflex port. The subwoofer is a little more manageable, but bear in mind its power cable is hard-wired, so even though it connects wirelessly to the soundbar, its 1m-long power cable will dictate where in your room it ends up. The soundbar supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object-based surround, plus their respective legacy versions, while for music lovers there's a host of high-res audio formats. There’s also built-in Alexa smarts that not only provides easy access to more music, but a degree of voice control. No matter how you get your audio on board, though, it’s delivered to you by a complement of six drivers in the soundbar plus another in the subwoofer. Facing out from the front of the soundbar in a ‘left/right’ arrangement there are four 57mm (fairly) full-range drivers, two at either end – each pair is reinforced by what Majority calls an ‘airport’ but what looks to me very much like a bass reflex port. The HW-Q700B boasts a number of audio presets and sound modes which are worth exploring. These include Standard, Adaptive Sound, Surround and Game. The Adaptive mode is particularly useful, as it makes full use of the speaker array, regardless of the source material. After all, not everything comes mixed for Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. You’ll know that you’re listening to native Dolby Atmos, as the front facing display spells it out for you. The HW-Q700B has several standout traits. Dialogue intelligibility is good, making it easy to follow the plot even when the sound mix gets a little busy.

HDMI eARC is the preferred method of connection for this, and it includes a 4K HDR HDMI passthrough port, so you don't lose the use of a port on your TV. The partnering wireless subwoofer is relatively compact and decor friendly, with a fabric frontage, and port to the rear. There are still some basic controls on the top, but for setup and operation you’re likely to use the provided remote or the SmartThings app. The remote closely resembles the zapper that comes with Samsung’s TVs, and includes all the necessary buttons for setting up and controlling the ‘bar. Underneath, you’ll find two HDMI ports. One provides the eARC/ARC connection to the TV, the other – with 4K HDR passthrough – offers the opportunity to plug in a local AV source. Hooking a Blu-ray player up directly allows the Q700B to decode any DTS:X-encoded discs you may have. This HDMI input could also serve as a games console or a set-top box. There are limited controls on the soundbar for volume, source selection and power. (Image credit: Steve May/TechRadar) Samsung HW-Q700B review: Sound quality

The movie’s opening nightclub scene features a thumping industrial beat, followed by a dramatic explosion. The soundstage is convincingly spacious; you sense the high ceilings and ambient space of the nightclub that Ryan Gosling finds himself in. The Q700B is positioned below Samsung’s HW-Q800B model, which adds side-firing drivers for a 5.1.2 listening experience. Design Connectivity is more accommodating than has become the norm. In addition to HDMI eARC/ARC, there’s an HDMI source input that supports 4k HDR10+ pass-through, ideal for hooking up a games console or 4k UHD Blu-ray player. There’s also an optical digital audio input for legacy TV connections. A host of other features rounds out an accomplished soundbar and sub combo that comes highly recommended, and thanks to recent price drops it’s also a best buy. Also considerDespite the ‘quantity-of-stuff-to-price’ ratio, though, there are no obvious compromises to the way the Sierra Plus is built or finished. The plastics and metal grilles of the soundbar look and feel fine, and are fitted together perfectly well. The subwoofer is the usual ‘vinyl wrap over MDF’, naturally – but, again, it’s constructed with obvious care and seems ready to last for ages. The Q700B is designed with larger screens in mind (55-inches upwards). It measures 44 inches / 1111mm wide. The handover between the two is achieved without alarms, and while the sub doesn’t have the variation or detail levels of the soundbar, it’s not quite as blunt an instrument as some alternatives. The bass stuff may not be the most varied, but it hits with determination and it’s controlled pretty well. Certainly the Majority doesn’t default to the droning some rival designs indulge in. Inevitably, what you don’t get is a sense of front to rear movement, or side-fills. This is more a consequence of the soundbar form factor than anything else. For full surround sound, you can’t beat actual physical speakers placed at the rear of a room.

that violates any law, statute, ordinance or regulation (including, but not limited to, those governing export control, consumer protection, unfair competition, anti-discrimination or false advertising); The Q700B soundbar also supports Tap Sound. If you own a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, you can simply touch the bar to make a Bluetooth connection using the SmartThings app.
