About this deal

As mentioned in the intro, the only real difference between the Garmin Fenix Pro Sapphire and the Garmin Tactix Delta, aside from the styling, are three tactical features that only the Tactix has, plus one that the Fenix also has. All of these very much fall into the category of being very useful for military users and almost completely irrelevant for everyone else, so I won’t dwell on them too much: Stealth Mode This certainly wasn’t a killer requirement for me – I like running with a phone anyway for safety reasons (and for the occasional snap of a glorious Brighton sunset) but with phones getting bigger and bigger, there’s no denying it is a hassle; requiring a bulky belt or running vest to hold it. With the Garmin Tactix’s ability to play music, I’ve started to really enjoy being able to go out on a run with just watch, headphones and a key.

If you don’t care about those things but want the Pro features, you can choose between a Tactix Delta or a Fenix Pro. Daily Smart Features: Bluetooth, ANT+ and WiFi connectivity, Connect IQ, Smart notifications, Text response/reject phone call with text, Calendar, Weather, Battery saver, Controls smartphone music, Plays and controls watch music, Music storage for up to 2,000 songs, Find My Phone, Find My Watch, VIRB Camera remote, iPhone & Android compatibility, Garmin Connect Mobile compatible, Garmin Pay That brief overview, however, doesn’t really do justice to the fact that the Garmin Tactix is a superb hiking watch. With detailed, full-colour maps; the ability to show latitude and longitude alongside any one of a number of different grid reference systems; route following; altimeter and barometer; three-axis compass; and half a dozen different navigation options, it’s probably the best hiking wearable out there, with functionality that you’d usually need a handheld device to get. Because most of that functionality is more about navigation in general than hiking specifically, and the navigation functionality is available both standalone and within any outdoor activity type, I’ll discuss that more in a separate section. Swimming Features: Available swim profiles include Pool Swimming, Open Water Swimming and Swim running, Open water swim metrics (distance, pace, stroke count/rate, stroke distance, swim efficiency, calories), Pool swim metrics, Stroke type detection, Drill logging, Countdown start, Basic rest timer, Repeat on rest timer, Pool swim workouts, Underwater wrist based heart rate, Heart rate from external HRMFitness Equipment/Gym: Available gym activity profiles include Strength, Cardio and Elliptical Training, Stair Stepping, Floor Climbing, Indoor Rowing, Pilates and Yoga, Cardio Workouts, Strength Workouts, Automatic rep counting In the pool, it works differently – you enter the length of the pool and then the watch counts laps by detecting you pushing off the wall, determining distance (and therefore speed and so forth) from that. It can also detect your stroke count and even what stroke style you were doing, with reasonable accuracy. The night vision capability means you can switch the view on the watch, allowing it to be read by night vision googles. Probably one for the military, but it could also come in handy for those very serious paintballers out there. One of the biggest selling-points of the Garmin Tactix, much like the Fenix, is its absolutely stellar battery life. Garmin claim up to 21 days in smartwatch mode and, while I haven’t fully validated that because I simply never go three weeks without doing an activity, it’s clear that the battery life when not using GPS features is long. Even running almost every day it regularly lasts a week.

It’s worth bearing in mind that all three of these features rely on the watch being linked to your phone, and your phone having signal. So, if you’re enjoying the freedom of running without a phone now that the watch has integral music, that isn’t going to work for you. And if you’re off somewhere truly remote and want a device to summon help in an emergency, you probably need something from the Garmin inReach range, which communicates via satellite to ensure it can summon help from almost anywhere on earth. Since the Garmin Tactix Delta is lauded for being a highly practical smartwatch, its array of useful features and modes for both outdoor activities as well as tactical uses is only to be expected. This watch comes with a night vision mode, a stealth mode, and a kill switch function which completely resets and wipes out the data stored in the watch. The Garmin Tactix Delta’s GPS function is also worth noting, since almost all of Garmin’s smartwatches contain highly accurate GPS and GLONASS systems, along with federal, topographical and ski maps.

The dial of the Garmin Tactix Delta is quite straightforward. As a smartwatch, the Garmin Tactix Delta has a touchscreen dial that is extremely intuitive, which makes it easy to navigate through the various applications and features. Its high-contrast LED screen also has a very clear display which is very legible, even when cast under bright light outdoors. In addition, this LED screen is also anti-reflective, preventing any light glares or distortions from impeding your view of the dial. This ensures that you will be able to read the dial clearly even on a hot summer day when the glare of the sun is inescapable. Features The construction is largely polymer, but with a brushed-steel plate around the top, with small visible screws that give it a ‘rugged’ and slightly industrial look. It’s this steel top that is the most notable difference with the Fenix: while the Fenix has a beveled edge around the display that slopes down to meet the sides, the Tactix has a flat edge with a pronounced lip or ledge. The differences are essentially purely aesthetic; the Tactix has a slightly more military appearance while the Fenix is more in-keeping with lifestyle watches like the Vivoactive.

We know they might not be a necessity for everyone, and some of you may never use them at all. But a few could come in handy depending on your lifestyle, while others are just plain cool to have on your wrist. And if you are in the military, or even law enforcement, this watch could become an essential piece of your gear. Battery Life: Smartwatch: Up to 21 days/24 days with solar, Battery Saver Watch Mode: Up to 80 days/120 days with solar, GPS: Up to 60 hours/66 hours with solar, GPS + Music: Up to 15 hours/16 hours with solar, Max Battery GPS Mode: Up to 120 hours/148 hours with solar, Expedition GPS Activity: Up to 46 days/56 days with solar The availability of open water swimming is going to make this a pretty appealing option for any triathletes (although Garmin does make cheaper multi-sport watches such as the Forerunner 745) as well as adventurers and outdoorsy types of all sorts. Pool swimming is a more standard feature on most of the Garmin range now, but it works brilliantly and makes this a very useful gym watch alongside everything else it does. Tactical Features The features on Garmin’s Tactix Delta, like most other activity watches, can be broadly split into those you’ll use day-to-day – essentially smart-watch features – and those that are only relevant when doing an activity, like GPS. There is some cross-over between the two, and all of the day-to-day features are also available when in an activity, but this is probably a useful way to break down the review. So, to begin with let’s go through the standard features you’ll use when wearing the watch most of the day. Watch facesIt's hard to find fault with the colour display, as Garmin really is leading the market when it comes to usability. As is standard in most of Garmin's premium watches, you'll get everything you need to monitor your training progress no matter your sport or fitness level. Battery: Smartwatch - up to 21 days | GPS - up to 60 hours | GPS and Music - up to 15 hours | Max Battery GPS Mode - 120 hours | Expedition GPS Activity - 46 days | Battery Saver Watch Mode - 80 days
