About this deal

The main family is Jewish, and then there are other two other families that play a pivotal role, one Jewish, and the other Italian Catholic. The break-up, which was connected to the apartment, which was connected to her job and her friends and her family, which was connected to the past, to her father, to Elaine, to the shared womb, to the mother they’d been cut out of thirty-six weeks later, to her scarred stomach that had never recovered. If you like your thrillers fast, thrilling and shocking and don't mind some lack of credibility and an 'over the top' plot, you will probably have a better time reading this story. Even at the dinner party that is the first 10% or so of the book nothing really thrilling or exciting happens.

If you are looking for a twisty, explosive and shocking thriller, The Dinner Party fits all those points and more. The connection of their children to each other creates an occasion that both families feel can only help them. A dinner party between friends where a game of trust is played, and the friends start turning up dead. She’s watching her mother bend over backward for her sister, Becca’s ‘special’ beau, Henry Rothschild. I can't honestly say that I liked Juliette or any of the other friends for various reasons and I wasn't very impressed with DI Renton either.

It's well written, pacey and full of twisty surprises and an ending that you will not see coming; it left me astonished. I have to say, I've read A LOT of author Acknowledgements, and I have never seen an author thank his readers and reviewers in a more heartwarming way. I hate to give less than three star reviews, but I'm perplexed by all the four star (and higher) reviews on GR for this novel.

Dinner Party: A Tragedy by Sarah Gilmartin | Goodreads Dinner Party: A Tragedy by Sarah Gilmartin | Goodreads

The Go,do, especially the wife Sylvia, really wants to impress the Rothschilds (yes that family), the parents of their daughter, Becca’s new boyfriend. A life-centered financial plan, when completed, brings the individual to a new place of contentment. The secrets didn't feel that big in the final analysis and the ending felt flat (and what the heck was the deal with the sitter).

As each family works at making the moment function, can they allow the demons that invade their lives to be set aside and create the atmosphere necessary for such a momentous occasion. This is something Sarah Gilmartin understands well as her debut novel begins and ends with a dinner to mark the anniversary of a death in the family. The story ends on a more positive note, after one more disastrous dinner party where all five members of the Gleeson family quarrel, speak up for themselves, and appear to be making some progress. Old family tensions and talk of their mother who did not come to the party cause tensions to surface, and Kate starts to spiral.
