About this deal

The Appeal follows the lives of a group of actors within a small town, trying to juggle a play and a fundraising appeal for a young girl. So all in all this is a theatrical mystery like no other, which includes some dynamite-like topics, (such as a child diagnosed with cancer), without becoming maudlin nor tritely sentimental. I had quite a few correct suspicions throughout so I think the twists were more contrived through slow release of the relevant information rather than being genuine twists. With only the characters' own words to go on, we can immediately start to build up a clear picture of each of them and of the group dynamic.

You could say she starts out well before she veers into that classic move of using someone else’s pain to talk about your own, usually more minor, experiences. So, so good’ – INDIA KNIGHT’Extremely addictive, it will reel you in, one piece of evidence at a time’ – ALEX PAVESI’Takes the whodunnit to a whole new level.I will admit I have never been good with a story that has a multitude of characters and this book was no exception.

it could perhaps have been shortened a bit to reduce some of the drag of its bloated middle, but that's just a minor quibble for a book that is otherwise so, so much fun.stretching the parameters of the goal a little bit, since this book isn't one that's been languishing on my shelves for years, like many others, but one i JUST RECEIVED from my gr secret santa this year. The last minute evidence added after an initial report back to the senior partner clarified some things. Instead of just writing "bit late, be there in a sec" what we all would normally do, it was more "bit late because I ran into character X who told me a dirty secret about Y, which made me want to do Z before I could run the errand A.

Overall, although the book felt a little too long, by the end, I found it to be CLEVER, COMPLEX and UNIQUE and kudos to author Janice Hallett for that! I am the author of The Pocket Detective, The Pocket Detective 2 and How to Survive a Classic Crime Novel.Whispered about in the shadows as one of their own attempts to separate fact from fiction, it isn’t until the dress rehearsal when things explode in a very real fashion.

Here, even if you do solve it, it feels like you’re making a professor or boss proud, rather than simply ruining the book for yourself. There are a wide range of characters and suspects, with missing papers from certain people, all we know about them is what we learn through others. If one piques my interest, I then usually wait until one of my hardier blogging friends has read it, to see if it is worthwhile getting. As others have mentioned before me, Hallett is not the first to create a mystery comprised only of written communications between different people. Between the original and meandering plot and the gripping premise, The Appeal presented quite the mystery from the very first word.
