About this deal

Make up a mix 1:1 Baharroth:White and thin it right down to a glaze. I used Vallejo mediums for this, but Lahmian Medium would work just fine. You want it pretty transparent. Softly highlight the middle of the blade in a band across it. If the blade is really long you might want to do one wide band like this and then one thinner one either side. Use strokes running along the angle away from the tip, this helps it look sharp

The first is light that is bounced off of the skin retaining the color of the source light. In typical conditions (outside, under a blue sky) this is a slightly cool (tinged with blue) white color. Typically, when you’re taking flesh tone and mixing in white to highlight, this is what you’re approximating. On the surfaces where light is shining directly, you get more white showing through. Contrast paints really benefit from a smooth primer (as do washes, as you can see). I also applied Guilliman Flesh over Wraithbone base paint. As a lot of layers were needed for perfect coverage, the finish wasn’t as smooth as with Wraithbone spray primer. You can see the Guilliman Flesh dried more uneven because of that. Sealing the surface with a coat of satin varnish might help to reduce this effect. Plate Mail Metal: A medium silver paint, close to GW Ironbreaker, but the coverage is slightly better. My recommended highlight colour: Shining Silver. This is the classic sepia tone. Seraphim Sepia (Citadel) carries a vintage-feel, old timey nostalgia. Sepia is that darkish orange-yellow you see on old photographs and historical documents that have sit out in the sun too long. In general, the colors I put on this list are the most useful across a range of color schemes, model types, and applications. Glaze cheeks of type I and II skin to provide the blush – this always develops due to sun damage to the exposed cheeks. Don’t apply Contrast paints too thinly or else the medium can’t do its magic. Apply them generously and soak up excess paint instead. Mephiston Red: This bold red paint is an analogous colour to Reikland Fleshshade, meaning that it sits next to it on the colour wheel. The two colours work well together, with the red adding a pop of colour that contrasts nicely with the muted browns of the Reikland Fleshshade.

Acrylic medium (8 parts) – This helps maintain the “binding” ability of your wash if you add too much water. You could get away without this if you thin with only a little water in your preferred wash mix. What about touching up mistakes? Because of their transparent nature, you can’t just paint another layer of Contrast paint over any paint spills. You’d need to apply your base colour first, then add another layer of Contrast. However, I found this often creates a “patchy” look. I prefer painting a matching regular acrylic paint over paint spills. Citadel Contrast – taken a step furtherWash the reds with Nuln Oil to darken the robes down more than an Agrax or Carroburg Crimson wash would do. We want some deep rich colors to set off the pale white. The colors underneath the dried wash gain a predictable “warm” and darker tone.
