About this deal

The red liquorice found in North America has other, non-liquorice root-based flavourings such as strawberry, cherry, raspberry and even cinnamon. It resembles actual liquorice candy only in shape and texture. ‘Red licorice' is something entirely different. First let’s agree about what liquorice is and what it is not. Ask someone from Canada or the United States if they like liquorice, and they may answer something like “yes, but only the red one”. It might sound simple, but the taste is addictive. These were candies that we might sometimes fight over with friends as a kid. For me, the taste of Dumle has a hint of licorice, even though it doesn’t contain any. Tyrkisk Peber and How to Learn to Love Finnish Salmiakki (aka Salty Licorice) The taste of Finnish salty licorice is very unusual for those who aren’t used to it. It definitely takes some practice. For me, salmiakki is like coffee. Most don’t like their first cup, but over time you learn to love the taste of coffee. Have you already tasted Finnish candy? What’s your favorite Finnish sweet treat? Let me know in the comments.

The liquorice shell is a soft, liquorice powder-coated treat, while the centre is a softer, almost liquid core that's more about texture than taste.Suomen Salmiakkiyhdistys palkitsi Turkinpippureiden keksijän Per Fjelstenin hänen elämäntyöstään Salmiakki Finlandia 2007 -palkinnolla. [1] Tuoteperhe [ muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä ] If you’re new to the liquorice game and want to dip your toes before diving in, Panda soft & fresh liquorice is your go-to. It's a sweet liquorice with no ammonium salt, and melts in your mouth while still retaining a bit of chewiness.

Furthermore, Dumle is excellent for baking, and Fazer provides a great collection of yummy Dumle recipes. I especially love the Dumle version of the shrove bun, a traditional Finnish winter treat. Finnish Candy BarIt was only several years later that I discovered that salmiakk candy is indeed flavoured with ammonium chloride – essentially ammonia in salt form. You have probably heard of ammonium salts before, at least indirectly.

Next up is Lakriskule salmiakk, a relative newcomer to the salty liquorice scene. These orbs of joy come in a range of variations, from bulk bargain buys like this one to chocolate-coated luxury versions sold in upscale airport shops. Tell a Scandinavian that you like ‘red liquorice' and you’ll get a funny look. The reason for this is that in most of the world, liquorice (also spelt “licorice”) refers to candy flavoured with liquorice root extract.I say bravado because Norwegians (and Scandinavians) are very aware that their love of liquorice is not shared by everyone, and will routinely serve salty liquorice to unsuspecting foreigners for the purpose of observing their predictably hilarious reaction. This led to pharmacies concocting liquorice-based cough syrups. Sometimes, these syrups would also contain ammonium chloride, because of its expectorant properties. Tyrkisk Peber -tuoteperheeseen kuuluu makeisten lisäksi muun muassa tikkareita, lakritsitankoja ja täysksylitolipurukumia [3]. Makeisesta on myös miedompia vaihtoehtoja, joiden väri poikkeaa alkuperäisestä. The basic variant is a large, hollow round shell both coated and filled with ammonium chloride powder. It is sold in dark blue, flame-decorated bags. The tyrkisk peber product family has later expanded to include the "Hot & Sour" (a milder variant of the traditional design, produced in four different flavours; Spicy Citrus, Pepper Liquorice, Chilli Melon and Strawberry Surprise) and "Bonfire" (soft, much milder candies) bagged variants, as well as lollipops and filled liquorice. There has also been a chili-flavoured version and a strongly licorice-flavoured version with less of the ammonium chloride and peppercorn flavouring, but these have since been discontinued. However, the licorice-flavoured variant can still be found as one of the flavours in the “Hot & Sour” bags. In Northern Europe there are competing different versions of salmiac-based candy, including pulverpadder (frog shaped candies), rustne søm and spejderhagl. Finnish liquorice is one of the oldest licorices in the world, and Fazer has been a pioneer of the Finnish licorice tradition since 1928. Traditional, soft Finnish licorice is produced by boiling liquorice root. Fazer Licorices have been developed and manufactured at Fazer's confectionery factory in Lappeenranta.

For our friends across the pond, think of it as a softer version of Twizzlers cut into bite-sized pieces. Some fans prefer to let these air dry for a harder outside, adding a slight crunch to the mix. Tyrkisk peber ( Danish for "Turkish pepper", often referred to as Turkinpippuri in Finnish, Türkisch Pfeffer in German, Tyrkisk pepper in Norwegian and Turkisk peppar in Swedish) is a salty liquorice candy flavoured with salmiac (ammonium chloride), produced by the Finnish company Fazer and popular in Northern Europe. Tyrkisk peber was originally invented by Per Fjelsten in 1976 in Jutland, Denmark and was originally made by the Danish company Perelly, before the company was acquired by Fazer. With its eerily Japanese anime-looking mascot, Dunder Salt competes closely with Salte UFO. They are so similar that we can just leave it at that.It has been around for a long time and constitutes a trip down memory lane for many Norwegians. Salte UFO in a Norwegian supermarket. Photo: Daniel Albert. Strong protests by Nordic countries, sweets manufacturing companies and industry organisations led to the EU dropping the proposed regulation. Salty liquorice is safe from regulators… for now. The Finns are a candy nation, and we’re used to high-quality candy. For example, candy needs to be fresh: soft candy should be soft.
