About this deal

Complete with a selection of Frank Hurley’s photos from Shackleton’s original voyage in 1914–17, as well as from the expeditions in 2019 and 2022, The Ship Beneath the Ice is the perfect tribute to this monumental discovery. Most of the photos included in this book were of Shackleton and his crew, plus a few of the modern expeditions — 2019 and 2022 — with just a couple of the actual wreck. The book’s first half chronicles yet another failure, incurred by Bound and company in their first attempt to locate the Endurance. It was exciting to see Endurance resting on the ocean floor, especially after reading how much went into finding it.

Briefly, on November 21, 1914, Ernest Shackleton and his crew sailed the Endurance to Antarctica to become the first to cross the continent, but early season pack ice trapped them in place and the Endurance sank. On November 21, 1914, after sailing more than ten thousand miles from Norway to the Antarctic Ocean, the Endurance finally succumbed to the surrounding ice. The Endurance22 expedition was organized by the Falkland Maritime Heritage Trust in an effort to find and survey the remains of the Endurance. With only hours to spare, Bound’s divers, with help from submersibles scanning the sea floor, not only located the Endurance 9,842 feet below the surface, they could see “the seams between the planks and even the nails that fastened them. Finally they had to stop the first expedition once the weather deteriorated and the ship got stuck in the ice. The reader lives as he did with the daily presence of the long-gone Shackleton and his men, their music, their suppers, their cruelty and kindness, their hopes and their many months on the ice.

He founded the first academic unit for maritime archaeology in England and from 1992 to 2013 was the Triton Fellow in Maritime Archaeology at St.This presentation promises to be an enlightening exploration of the past and a timely reflection on our planet’s future.

A few funny quotes that illustrate the dry humor that perpetuates hardened professionals such as these, even when on a grueling expedition (two to be exact, spoiler alert!Mail on Sunday The story of Shackleton’s Endurance is one of the most extraordinary in the history of exploration. Three years later, however, Shackleton was back in the polar south, going for a consolation prize: the first crossing of the Antarctic continent. Bound is still talking about the original Endurance mission in the final chapters and it gets distracting rather than enlightening. I think the expedition-inviters spy on possible invitees and thus I will never be asked to go on an expedition.

The Ship Beneath the Ice: The Discovery of Shackleton's Endurance by Mensun Bound is a very highly recommended account of the two expeditions undertaken in 2019 and 2022 to successfully find the Endurance. Her anecdotes are humorous, heartfelt, and supremely captivating, recounted with the passion of a true survivor and the acerbic wit of a weathered, street-wise New Yorker. The Ship Beneath the Ice gives a blow-by-blow account of the two epic expeditions to find the Endurance. But surely in 2019 the instant a ship found itself in grave danger, a rescue would be quickly mounted and sent off.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and love adventure expeditions feel like the author gave voice to one of the modern day adventures and although he has made it his career to retrieve lost ships I don’t think I could get tired of reading about it. He is a Trustee of the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust and was Director of Exploration on the 2019 and 2022 expeditions to locate Shackleton’s Endurance. Join the South Street Seaport Museum and The National Maritime Historical Society for a special lecture by British marine archaeologist Mensun Bound, the “Indiana Jones of the Deep. Since its beginnings in 1963, the National Maritime Historical Society has been celebrating the sea and raising awareness of maritime heritage and the role seafaring has played in shaping civilization. In spite of the fact that we know the outcome of each - Shackleton and his entire crew miraculously survived and Endurance was found and photographed – both, in their different ways, are suspenseful tales of courage and ingenuity in a hostile environment.
