About this deal

Add another layer of cake using the remaining cake slices, drizzling over 2 tablespoons of cranberry juice. Then, add one third of the fresh fruit and the remaining jelly squares.

The choice is yours, traditionally sponges were considered the boozy dessert or tipsy pudding. We serve ours with orange juice so the kids can enjoy it, but for adults feel free to add as much or as little sherry as you like. 1/2 Cup is a suggestion, for a drier cleaner dessert reduce this, or use to your liking, Can I leave off the cream? A trifle is a layered dessert made of syrup-soaked cake, juicily-ripe fruit, wobbly jelly, vanilla-scented custard and dollops of whipped cream. What’s on the bottom layer? Caster sugar works well when making “airy” recipes like sponge cake, mousse, meringue, or soufflé. It’s often used to sweeten fresh fruit since it dissolves faster than granulated sugar.

Trifle sponges are a somewhat British ingredient but are no more than dry sponge cakes. As the cakes are dry they have the capacity to soak up a fair amount of liquid in a trifle, which makes them soft and also flavours the sponges. To help the cake soak up all the flavours, it’s drizzled with cranberry juice. Again, if you prefer another liquid, like apple juice or a liquor, you can use that. But cranberry juice works really well with all the berry flavours that are going on in my Trifle recipe. To store any leftovers, place the Trifle into the fridge and cover with cling wrap. It’s best enjoyed within 2 – 3 days. You can really customise trifle to your liking and to what you have available to you, but follow the basic thread – cake, soak, fruit, jelly, custard – repeat. The final touch? Clouds of whipped cream.

Make this trifle and share it with your muggle friends/family because nobody would EVER know that this is gluten free. Once this outside-facing ring of raspberries is in place you can fill in the middle with raspberries too if you like, but it's not essential. Place pieces of the jam roll around the inner edge of the trifle bowl and place three pieces in the bottom of the bowl. After laying the base, a fluffy layer of creaminess is a must in a trifle. Homemade or store-bought custard, pudding or whipped cream help bind the dish together, adding a light and delicious layer that breaks up the heavier ingredients. (Note: In our example here, we made a vanilla pastry cream.) My Classic Trifle starts with cake. I usually use small sponge rolls that I can buy at the supermarket – but you can use any kind of sponge cake, vanilla cake or madeira cake you like– cakes without any frosting are best. Gently heat the jam in a saucepan or microwave-safe bowl to thin it out. Take off the heat and add the whisky and orange juice. Allow to cool and taste to see if you want to add more whisky or orange juice. I like to lay the sponge roll pieces around the side then base of the trifle bowl and lightly pour over some of the liquid you are using. Then to this I fill with almost half the custard. Then layer half the peaches, jelly and strawberries then a thin layer of more custard. Of course you can – you can switch the sponges for leftover cake or slices of swiss roll. Can I Make Trifle Without Jelly?

As we mentioned above, this will serve 4. You can make in one large bowl or four individual bowls/glasses. The size of your bowl will dictate the amount of the ingredients a bit. Pour over another 1 cup of custard. Scatter the remaining fruit over the top. Cover the top with plastic wrap and leave in the fridge for at least 4-6 hours or even better, overnight. Roll up, roll up! I’m delighted to share with you: my ULTIMATE cheat’s gluten free trifle recipe. I promise you that it’s so easy to make that you’ll almost feel like you’re cheating when you’re making it!The traditional English trifle starts with a layer of ladyfingers or sponge cake soaked in liquor, fruit juice or even coffee. Then the dish filled to the brim, it’s time to add the finishing touch! Whipped cream is a popular crowning glory for a trifle, and homemade whipped cream is easier to make than you’d think.
