I found myself gripping my seat on more than one occasion as the situation the men found themselves in began to worsen, and I lost count of the number of times I involuntarily held my breath during underwater scenes which were literally a matter of life and death for all involved. The Kursk submarine disaster that took place in August 2000 in the Barents Sea lasted for several days. Of course the longer this went on for and relied on international assistance, the more it exposed the falability of the Russian military might. It lasted for a total of 4 days and made news headlines around the world as international help, including from the British Navy tried to reach out to the Russian government and offer assisstance to assist in the rescue of the crew of this nuclear submarine, but alas to no avail, tragically ending the lives of its 118 crew members. But above the surface, there are added complications. First, there’s a 16-hour wait for authorities to even find the sub and then when located, there are deep structural issues with the potential mode of rescue, with shoddy, failing equipment making a difficult mission turn desperately impossible. One of the foreigners trying to help is real life Commodore David Russell (Colin Firth), commander of HMS Vanguard, a Trident nuclear vessel. However, the Russian government, despite the offers coming from the international community refused help and wasted valuable time. They would have rather sacrificed these sailors rather than swallow their pride and request help. One of the key Russian dignataries from the upper echelons is played by the ever stable Max Von Sydow. Kursk: The Last Mission is a dramatisation of the 2000 K-141 Kursk submarine disaster, where Russian bureaucracy, failing technology, and a series of unfortunate accidents, all came together to claim the lives of 188 men.

They ran out of money,” says Philip D Grove, a naval historian and lecturer at Britannia Royal Navy College. “People were short of pay, there were poorly trained conscripts, and some of them were giving up their jobs. The whole thing was breaking down by the mid-to-late Nineties. The film could even have played even more on the critical downsizing of the Russian Navy, because psychologically that was important for everyone involved.” Brest: Tournage d'un film sur le naufrage du Koursk". Retrieved 14 March 2017.It’s an unlikely lurch toward the multiplex for a director who once co-founded the Dogme 95 movement with Lars von Trier and there are some interesting stylistic choices at play. The most notable, and successful, of these is Vinterberg’s decision to play with the screen ratio, only widening it out when the Kursk is submerged, and elsewhere, he employs intimate camerawork in the scenes between the men both above and below sea level, an independent touch in a broader picture, and some eerily effective views of the water that surrounds the ailing sub. It’s not all quite as effective, however. Given the budget and the ensuing expectations, Kursk exists in that familiar movie universe where Russian characters are played by Belgian, French, German and Swedish actors, all of whom speak English throughout. It’s a price to pay for a wider audience and while initially distracting, it could have been far worse (*coughs* Harrison Ford in K-19 *ends coughing*). The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September 2018, where Thomas Vinterberg (director) and Artemiy Spiridonov (actor) presented the film in English and Russian languages. [26] The film was scheduled to be released through DirecTV Cinema on 23 May 2019, before being released in a limited release on 21 June 2019, by Saban Films. Summary: Based on the gripping true story of the Kursk submarine tragedy of 2000 in which 188 men lost their lives, Kursk: The Last Mission is a tense submarine thriller from critically- acclaimed director Thomas Vinterberg ( The Hunt, Far From the Madding Crowd). When a Russian naval exercise goes horribly wrong, the Kursk submarine erupts in flame killing most of the men onboard and sending the trapped survivors to the bottom of sea. Dear Vinterberg: were you scared to portray Putin in the film? If so, don't undertake such a film, or at least don't call it a "true story." Even later, when Larry King, asked Putin in an interview "What happened to the submarine?" - Putin replied with a callous smirk "She drowned." The heart-breaking letter was written by Dmitri Kolesnikov, the commander of the torpedo section - why not honor him by using the real name? You ascribed the letter to the submarinen commander-in-chief, which is false. Listen to a song "Captain Kolesnokov" By Yuri Shevchuk - it is true to real feelings from this tragedy. a b c d "Vladimir Putin Character Cut From Luc Besson's Russian Thriller".
