About this deal

At Washing Line, we regularly get asked a whole range of questions about choosing the best retractable clotheslines. So, we have put together a list of the most frequently asked questions we receive to help you make the right decision for you. What is a retractable clothesline? Brabantia 50m Lift-O-Matic, love it, 15 years and going strong."(Tried and tested by Mumsnet user edoc) On the one hand, this means that there isn’t a large choice of height options, which some people might prefer, but on the other hand it means the system is uncomplicated. Brand: Brabantia | Dimensions open: H200cm x W295cm x D208 (turning diameter) | Dimensions closed: H200cm x W18cm x D11cm | Material: Steel and aluminium | Ground spike included: Yes | Cover included: Yes | Maximum wash load: 4+ washing loads What we like I have a four-arm, Vileda one. Had it for seven years. It gets put in the shed when not in use, and the ground spike is concreted in. I'm in the outskirts of Edinburgh, and mine is in a windy spot and has always been more than up to the job." (Mumsnet user MrsBarryAllen recommended it for windy weather) Our verdict

If your retractable washing line is sagging, you have to tighten it. There is usually either a wheel to tighten it, or you can do it manually. However, lines with three arms instead of four can be weaker, especially if they are not well made. This is because less arms are having to support the same amount of weight as a four-arm line. Brand: Chimney Sheep | Dimensions: 39.6cm x 29.8cm x 6.2cm | Material: Waterproof fabric and rust proof brass | Weight: 2.09kg What we like Grips, clips or clamps can to be used in place of tying a knot (as it’s not so easy to tie a knot in wire). There are various grips and clamps available. Some do a better job than others, and some have a better aesthetic appearance (please see the notes below). If you’re not sure what parts you need, sometimes it’s a good idea to have to look at what’s available? The tables below may give you an idea of what you can get, what they look like and how much they cost… The price tends to go up, dependant on the size and type of wire. In this case we’re using stainless steel (rust prevention), and a larger number of wire strands (to make the wire more flexible). However, the benefits outweigh the slight increase in overall material cost. The Washing Line Components: The weather: Now, we know we cannot control the weather (otherwise, it wouldn’t rain half as much as it does). However, you still need to think carefully about it. For example, a freestanding airer would not be practical if you live in a particularly windy spot (unless you wanted your family’s clothing to end up in your neighbour’s garden.) For smaller families, of just a couple of people, a rotary washing line with 30 – 40 metres of line should be sufficient. The most obvious advantage of retractable washing lines is the way they operate. The fact that they are designed to return into the casing when not in use helps protect the clothesline as well as free up your outside space. This is probably the main reason why people choose to buy a retractable washing line over traditional clotheslines that are fixed in position.

There is a soft grip handle, used to open and close the washing line, and the mechanism works well. It gives a choice of four different positions which help alter the tension of the line. We have to consider what components are best to create the clothesline. This basically boils down to what type of stainless steel wire do we use and how do we fix the ends? For this reason, high-quality three-arm lines can be more expensive than four-arm models because of the materials used.Brand: Minky | Dimensions open: H33.5 x W9.8 x D5.1cm | Dimensions closed: Unspecified | Material: Metal | Ground spike included: No (Freestanding) | Cover included: No | Maximum wash load: 1+ wash loads What we like

As if doing the laundry isn't already a chore, the Great British weather (hi rain!) can make getting things dry even more of a challenge. That's why the Chimney Sheep Large Laundry Mac laundry protector could come in handy. It's a cover with a diameter of up to 2.5 metres designed for rotary washing lines with three or four arms to keep the rain off and let you leave the washing out longer. Have you ever reached for your washing line and run your finger along it before hanging up your laundry, only to find the lines are grimy? Well, the Leifheit Linomatic rotary washing line offers a handy solution to keep things clean: the lines automatically retract into the rotary arms when not in use, keeping them free from dirt, moisture and cobwebs. On the plus side, it’s a decent height at 194.5 cm meaning the washing is not in danger of dragging on the ground. Plus, longer items can be hung with enough clearance so that pets don’t brush past them. As we previously mentioned, the best retractable washing line for you is dependent on what you need, how much space you have and where that space is. As most models are more than affordable, price doesn’t really come into it as a factor. Our advice at Washing-Line is to always spend those few extra pounds as it can make the world of difference in terms of quality and the product’s life. What is the best outdoor retractable clothesline?
