About this deal

You can also use the rubber casing to sandwich your phone whilst it’s charging – I’m assuming that’s what it’s there for! These bags have plenty of space for a laptop (larger bags have padded slots for larger laptops, too).

The slot itself will read at speeds up to 65MB/s, which while not the fastest around is still quicker than the original My Passport Wireless model – it’s also worth remembering you’ll generally push a card in and walk away, leaving the drive to do its thing, so top speed in this regard isn’t essential. It also comes in a rubber case, which gives it a little more security, and while I haven’t seriously dropped it yet, it’s been banged around a fair bit since I bought it and functions perfectly well. With the My Passport Wireless SSD, I can import the contents of my memory card to the unit, then use the WD My Cloud app on my iPad to wirelessly access whichever RAW file I want. Initially I was worried that the My Passport Wireless SSD was a solution for a problem that didn’t exist, but the more I used it, the more I found that it can actually complement what many of us do already. On the positive side, the transfer process was still faster and the battery discharge was still far more efficient compared to what I had previously seen on the Gnarbox. On a Mac, you can access it via the Finder by opening the Network, after which it presents a standard folder labeled Storage; subsequently it simply appears as Storage in the main Finder view of your computer, allowing you to easily drag and drop files.

So, if you want it the WD My Passport Wireless SSD does give the ability to edit RAW files while travelling without the need for a laptop. As you can see, there is a dedicated power button, along with an SD / Battery button that is used to check battery level, or start copying the contents of an inserted SD card. There’s no display on the drive, but four blue LEDs indicate the backup progress, one quarter at a time. In either case, you’ll need to switch on the drive and connect your device to its Wifi access point – the My Passport Wireless SSD broadcasts two Wifi networks, one at 5GHz for speed and the other at 2.On the downside, the unit is fairly large (although still smaller than any laptop), it's not water-proof, and you'll only enjoy the speed of the SSD with a direct USB connection.

Summary The WD My Passport Wireless SSD is a highly versatile device that lets you backup your photos in the field without lugging around a laptop or power supply. To access files on the device, I would recommend to connect it directly to the computer (see below), since it will take forever to do the same over the wireless network. Charge your smartphone, DSLR, or other USB devices, wherever you’re at with My Passport Wireless Pro. However, if you want a storage device without carrying a laptop, then at the moment My Passport Wireless SSD is the way to go. Think Tank (and others) design many such packs engineered to fit under commercial airline seats, or easily in the overhead bins.Wi-Fi password protection helps to keep your photography, videos, music and other important files safe from unauthorized wireless access. I reviewed the most expensive 2TB unit, but you can save some money by opting for one of the smaller units too. To the right of that, you will find a battery level indicator, below which WiFi information is also provided. This means that you should be able to get pretty fast speeds when copying large files (such as video files), but if you are dealing with many smaller files (such as JPEG or RAW images), expect to get slower speeds, which is quite normal. If you’re connecting directly to the drive, say in the field, then you’ll need to browse the available Wifi networks with your device and choose the drive’s 2.

If you like to edit and share multiple photos via your smart phone and tablet, the wireless functionality of this product can help. The My Passport Wireless SDD can be used to charge any USB powered accessory – seen here with the Sony a7R III.Previously I owned a ColorSpace portable backup drive which did a similar job, albeit much slower due to its spinning HDD. They have unfortunately disabled it's ability, to be part of a cloud system following this generation of WD outdated security. WD provides the free My Cloud app for iOS and Android devices to access the contents of the drive wirelessly, as well as to configure it and set it up in the first place. Above: Connecting the WD My Passport Wireless SSD over USB 3 allows you to unlock its full potential speed.
