About this deal

Red Armor Highlights: The armor is highlighted with a mix of Hyek Yellow and Burnt Orange, at least 2:1. Rather that doing continuous smooth edge highlights I did short lines and dots to give it a rougher appearance. The darker splotches were hit with the highlight color on the bottom edges to give them the appearance of a slightly cratered surface. Our readers might be surprised to learn that not all painting is done on models! I painted this picture of my beloved yet troublesome cat, Mini, at a “drink wine and paint stuff” event hosted by my employer in what I think was the Spring of 2012. This picture was taken in the Summer of 2011, when Mini was still a wee kitten. Troll Slayer Orange: Troll Slayer Orange is a bright orange color that can be used to create a split-complementary color scheme with Wild Rider Red. This color can be used to create a sense of movement and energy on the miniature, as well as to break the monotony of the red. Kharn, Eater of Worlds by Anthony Reynolds follows the World Eaters in the wake of the Heresy as they look for a new leader. Transfers – I’ll keep this brief as plenty has been written here already; I get all my sets from Mighty Brush and do the following:This bonded pair of Squigs found their way into my home when I got a box of Zarbaj’s Jitz with my Adepticon swag bag last year. The two have been inseparable since I adopted them, only leaving each other’s side to maul whatever poor fool decided to get too close to their territory. My paintscheme for Zarbaj and his Jitz involves a lot of purple and yellow, so I forewent the typical reds and oranges you see Squigs come in, and went instead for a pinkish purple. I think it’s pretty fashionable. Pet love extends beyond the bounds of Games Workshop. Knight Models get in on the action in a whole bunch of ways, from Harley’s hyenas to the giant goddamn demon that Damien Wayne drags around. But none more majestic then the owls that the Court of Owls deploy. Owl. Credit: Lupe For the basecoats of the metallics I use Pro Acryl Bronze and Pro Acryl Dark Silver. These have amazing coverage and go down in one coat over white with no issues. Lastly is the leather details which I paint with Wyldwood contrast paint for a nice dark brown. The Blood Angels Space Marines: The Blood Angels are a chapter of Space Marines known for their red color scheme. Wild Rider Red is a great choice for painting the armor of this chapter, it matches their official red color and makes it easy to achieve a consistent look across all your miniatures. Evil Sunz Scarlet in a smaller crescent atop the previous one, leaving space for the Khorne Red towards the center

Carefully drybrush only the most heavily corroded iron and steel areas with Ryza Rust. Next, because rust has a tendency to break out in recessed areas, create a 1:2 mix of Fire Dragon Bright and Lahmian Medium - apply this to the recesses of the iron and steel areas. Apply multiple coats if you’d like it to be a little brighter. I’d recommend being somewhat selective about which recesses you apply this too, and applying it to everything can look a bit over the top and unrealistic. If you’re painting a character, or just want to take it a bit further, a good next highlight is Scalecolor SC-38 Aldebaran Red.

These Citadel Layer paints from Games Workshop are designed to be used straight over Citadel Base paints and itself, without any mixing. If you use several layers of this high-quality water based acrylic paint on your models it will create a rich and natural finish that will look as amazing on display as it would 3 hours into a gruelling battle. The paints are supplied in 12ml pots and can be used on any plastic, metal or resin models. Carefully edge highlight the red with Scalecolor SC-37 Antares Red. I even highlight into some of the shaded areas to add a bit of definition. My goal here is to get a nice fade going on the models. I’ll then use Carroburg to darken the edges around the armor trim. I was tired of cleaning up after myself, so I decided to adopt this little fella in the hopes that maybe the floor would be a little less messy. The good news is that it worked great; my floors are bare. The bad news is that he’s also eaten the leather couch, three of the neighborhood cats, and both of my legs. “Rippy” the Ripper. A second coat of Nuln Oil for a few darker splotches in shade area. Red Armor Highlights

At the risk of going slightly off topic, I’d like to say that I prefer to start with khorne red, then wazdakka red, finishing with evil sunz scarlet completely eschewing Mephiston red. They are certainly differing levels on the dark-light scale, but I don’t think any of them have any ‘orange’ or ‘pink’ to them so they’re not going to clash. However, I’ll admit that this method is not going to give you a large amount of contrast if that’s what you’re looking for. It’s just textured enough for my taste whilst still being easy. The color vivid red with hexadecimal color code #f70d1a is a shade of pink-red. In the RGB color model #f70d1a is comprised of 96.86% red, 5.1% green and 10.2% blue. In the HSL color space #f70d1a has a hue of 357° (degrees), 94% saturation and 51% lightness. This color has an approximate wavelength of 612.7 nm. Color Variations Tyranids are a purely organic faction, which means that even within a fixed colour scheme there’s room for individual variation and mutation. This is great news if, like me, you have trouble figuring out the right recipe for the colour you want – you can experiment on different models and units until you’re happy, and the results won’t look odd at all! The World Eaters have a fairly simple paint scheme – red armor with brass or gold trim. That said, keeping the army interesting visually with a simple scheme can be a bit of a challenge. Color Charts Blue Malayan Coral Snake : The effect on the body was achieved by using thinned Frostheart Contrast with a White Scar drybrush, wet blending with Blood Angels Red Contrast for the head and tail. Scales are Leviadon Blue with a Blue Horror drybrush. Somehow it took Games Workshop until the end of the 2010s to realize one important fact: People like pets. 40k saw the release of Kill Team: Rogue Trader, which included an extremely good boy, while Age of Sigmar has embraced Khornedogs, Gryph-Hounds, and Aetherwings for the Bloodbound and Stormcast factions. Where they’ve really outdone themselves is, as is so often the case, in Necromunda, where every gang has had an associated pet to accompany their gang leaders. Color Charts At this stage I’m doing more red highlight as well, doing edge highlights on the red with Wazdakka Red. I also cover the eyes, doing them in a gemstone style using Warpstone Glow shaded with Coelia Greenshade and Nuln Oil and highlight with a spot of Moot Green.

I envision the forces from my Tyranid splinter fleet absorbing bio-mass, adapting themselves to the warzone and changing their colours to match the environment. To this end I opted for a very ‘naturalistic’ scheme reminiscent of many insects and arachnids in our world – namely earthy tones with a lighter underbody and darker areas on any hard plates and carapaces. I painted the off-yellow skin in slightly different ways on my Barbgaunts, Psychophage, and Von Ryan’s Leapers – employing various combos of Plaguebearer Flesh and thinned-down Nazdreg Yellow over a Wraithbone base, with highlights ranging from Dorn Yellow to Flayed One Flesh – but they all still look like closely-related beasties. I’ve got yet another approach in mind for my Termagants… I have had a great deal of fun experimenting with using various real-world colour schemes that can be found in nature for my Tyranids. I’ve so far attempted schemes based on the following:

The meat and bone bits are Flesh Tearers Red over Wraithbone, with Pallid Wych Flesh highlights. We’re going to work on this at the same time as the reds for a moment, so we’re doing steps 6-9 to apply decals and a pinwash. The metallic highlights used were Pro Acryl Copper and Vallejo Game Color Chainmail. For these I wipe a bit of the paint off on a paper towel before running the brush against the upper surfaces of the metals areas. It’s similar to a drybrush technique. The leather bits were highlighted with Vallejo Flat Earth.
