About this deal

The stories of George Connelly the footballer are fantastic, his accounts of some games are truly fascinating, David Hay in particular has some great stuff here. U.S. v. Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP, 2004 U.S.T.C ¶ 50,289 (N.D. Ill 2004) - In a “John Doe” summons proceeding, we represented a group of clients of the law firm and persuaded the Court that under FRCP Rule 24(b),merely being involved in an IRS audit and dispute was a sufficient "injury" to our clients to enable them topermissively intervene. How I wish I could have justified his [Stein’s] confidence in me. My once buoyant spirit was beginning to flag faster than he could have imagined. And, in spite of my upbeat prediction about there always being the 1978 World Cup, I just knew it was never going to happen for me as far as Scotland, or Celtic, for that matter were concerned.”

We were going for 8/9 but Jimmy Johnstone was injured and John Hughes was suspended. Without the 2 flying wingers, Celtic suddenly appeared to be vulnerable. But playing with those guys helped you. They made it easy for you because they were such great players and great professionals. We learned every day training with them and playing with them. It is great to have good professionals in your side when you are a young boy. You depend on them. The transfer of David Hay, his closest friend, after a dispute over wages was the final straw. Connelly had even gone on strike with Hay over their wages. But in 1975, after a long absence, Celtic released him.The voice wouldn't give up and it was bawling at me to kill Helen. I turned to her and yelled: "Get oot of the hoose and phone the doctor."

It’s like what happened with Brendan Rodgers when he left. The fans don’t like people walking out on their team so I was worried they would turn on me.”I’ll give you in a nutshell. When Billy was playing you had a chance against anybody, he meant that much to the team. And, in spite of my upbeat prediction about there always being the 1978 World Cup, I just knew it was never going to happen for me as far as Scotland, or Celtic, for that matter were concerned." You could imagine a Hollywood mogul being intrigued by his final farewell, although perhaps not enough to commit it to celluloid, but it was fairly decisive for all that. The players were participating in the morning's training when Connelly reached an irrevocable moment in time. One of those present gives an approximation of a last hurrah you would not have imagined forming on Charlton Heston's lips. Fact is often even stranger than fiction, as I can now testify. The real reason for the anger, the paranoia and the despair I was suffering from was a disastrous marriage. A misguided union of two people that was so awful it ended my time with Celtic. Connelly, hailed as the greatest talent of his generation, however, hitched a ride on the down escalator and into a private world of obscurity and, sadly, alcoholism.
