About this deal

Another optional stage, but one I’m quite fond of, is adding battle damage. Using the same brown as the base coat, sponge it on some of the armor plate’s edges. Less is more when it comes to battle damage. Add dots of pure white over the previous steps. This is the bit where suddenly it looks like metal and it’s very satisfying. You really are aiming for small dots (unless it’s a vehicle then you can go for bigger patches. Reds

When Morrslieb is full in the sky, the Doombull roar out a bellowing call that resounds across the forest for many miles, attracting yet more Minotaurs and invoking the bloodgreed that runs through all of their kind. Soon the forest will echo to the thunder of gargantuan hooves as Minotaurs gather by the hundred at the herdstone, pawing the ground in their haste to trample and crush. [1c] You can see the final result if you look at the vines between the Dreadsaurians toes on the left side (sorry, I don`t have a better close up) So, my Custodes area little bit more basic than the rest here, but honestly that’s one of the biggest strengths of Custodes in my mind. They look amazing with a fairly basic paintjob. As is my usual brand, I will be presenting the lazy way to paint models that still look pretty good on the tabletop. Leadbelcher basecoat then Ironbreaker layer on the metals – gun, chest eagle, and in this case the soft bits of the armour Pendulin’s Shadowkeepers scheme can be found in a separate article – How to Paint Everything: Adeptus Custodes Shadowkeepers.Highlight almost all the gold with Scale 75 Dwarven Gold, leaving the Necro Gold in just the recesses. Transfers were added to the model. I started with a coat of ‘Ardcoat to seal the paint job and to create a smooth surface for the transfer to cling on. Once in place and completely dry, I apply several coats of Microsol, which softens the transfer and makes it snuggle even to curved surfaces such as shoulder pads. The red tactical arrow is based on a white arrow from the Ultramarines transfer sheet, painted over with Blood Red [ Evil Sunz Scarlet] once sealed in place. The numbers come from the Dark Angels section from the Dark Imperium transfer sheet. Finally, I sprayed the whole model with a couple of thin coats of satin varnish ( Munitorum Varnish works great for this).

Both the Chaplain and the Judiciar had their skeleton ribs painted the same as the skeleton on the Ancient’s banner, Rakarth Flesh and then Flayed One Flesh. P3 Paints did not really match very closely with the old GW range, but a detailed explanation of each paint can be found here: http://www.brushthralls.com/pre-painting-prep/color-theory-10p3.html Mix Mournfang Brown with Lahmian Medium (80% Mournfang, 20% Medium) to create a wash. Wash the entire overcoat with this mix. Once dry, give it a light second coat.As with most of these how-to guides, this scheme is design with army painting in mind, so easy to replicate on multiple models, fast and efficient. Ochre Armor Codex: Adeptus Custodes is full of insight into the Emperor’s glorious bananas, highlighting their nature, organization and secret wars, but if you want to read more, here are a few books we’d suggest that dive into greater detail on the Custodes.

For the hair, I once again started with Doombull Brown and this time highlighted with Reaper Tarnished Copper, then again with Tarnished Copper mixed with a bit of Wild Rider Red. If you would like to do a more "juicy" version of a tree (jungle etc.) I am using Mournfang Brown -> Agrax Earthshade -> Mournfang Brown -> mixture of Skrag Brown and Ushabti Bone (3:1) -> mixture of Skrag Brown and Ushabti Bone (1:3) or Screaming Skull or even Ceramite White Use Agrax Earthshade to shade and change the colour of the areas painted in the previous stage (staff, feather, lower tunic and garment around the shoulders).

Light Grey

I layered RMS Polished Bone but only on the skull of the cheast eagle, then highlighted the whole chest eagle with Vallejo Model Color White [ White Scar, but VMC White is my favourite white when it comes to coverage]. Wash the reds with Nuln Oil to darken the robes down more than an Agrax or Carroburg Crimson wash would do. We want some deep rich colors to set off the pale white. Blood Games by Dan Abnett is a short story set within the Emperor’s Palace and what Custodes do when they’re not fighting.

The gold was edge highlighted with Army Painter Shining Silver [Runefang Silver or Stormhost Silver]. Caracalla has more accents than most custodes, but I’ll go through an abbreviated method for all of them: Again, highlight with a brown, only this time use Citadel Balor brown. Again, highlight even less of the armour

Painting the Leather

I wanted my Blade Champion to represent a certain celebrity as featured in a recent video game adaptation. I suspect this was GW’s intention if you look at the name they’ve used for the character in Shadow Throne, Aristothes Carvellan. Adeptus Custodes Blade Champion by Crab-stuffed Mushrooms Final highlight the bottom-right of the jewel with an even smaller layer of Baharroth Blue mixed with White. Start with a base coat of Rhinox Hide, then we will use our reddish brown from the armor to highlight. This will give our army a cohesive color palette, as we end up using the same colors for different purposes. It helps to paint your heads separately no matter what you do, but this is especially important for your skin, because you don’t want to get flesh tones on your nice finished armor color. For the flesh tones, I wanted something a bit greyer and more inhuman than your standard Cadian Fleshtone. I go into more detail in the HTPE: Human Skin article, but for Caracalla, the skin is VGA Dwarf Skin mixed with a mid/slightly dark grey. To highlight, I mixed in more of the dwarf skin, though the entire color range I used has a good proportion of grey in it. Instead of a flesh wash, I used diluted nuln oil to wash the skin. I start by brushing on Citadel Khorne Red. If there’s any browns left I try to leave these showing in the recesses.
