And she talked to everyone. You couldn't go in there for a quiet drink on your own - you would end up talking to everyone else in the bar. This featured in a memoir about Hay by Paul Collins, Sixpence House, about an American who came to live in Hay, worked for Richard Booth and tried to renovate Half Moon House, which he renamed Sixpence House for the book. He also renamed Lucy - she's "Violet" and the pub becomes "The Hogshead". On Sunday, though, I had the chance to join the Kilvert Walk led by Oliver Balch, as part of the Hay Independence celebrations.

Rob Appleby pointed out that all the scientific endeavour over the last few hundred years has led to us (as a species) learning about 5% of all matter in the universe. There's 95% of stuff out there that we really know very little about, and that includes dark matter. He seemed quite excited by this thought, as it means we have so much yet to discover. There's a bollard on the pavement, and the owner of the building has asked before if it could be moved a bit further out to give more protection to the building, but so far Powys County Council haven't done anything about it. Geoffrey Meadon died earlier this year, and someone has kindly sent me his obituary - he had a fascinating life!Gift Card Fraud apparently is someone phoning you up to tell you to buy gift cards and read out the details of them over the phone, otherwise the police will come round and arrest you! Outrageous decor aside, there are two floors of crime, horror and detective fiction to explore, including a wonderful bookshelf filled with green vintage Penguin editions, which form part of the crime and thriller antiquarian collection. They’re all very deserving of a visit though so make sure scroll through to the end where I’ve listed all twenty of them! Following on from the August column, Mikey the dog reported that Gyp was tired of her nine puppies now, and homes were being found for them. Brecon Food Bank, based at St John's Centre, is filling a very real need locally. They are part of the Trussell Trust charity, which runs foodbanks across the UK, and give out three days' worth of emergency supplies at a time to people who are in crisis.

They also have two new Trustees. Fiona Howard was head of Hay School and on Hay Town Council, including periods as Mayor. Chris Fyles is a recent resident of Hay, having moved here from Cornwall eighteen months ago. He has experience of being a Charity Trustee from his time as Trustee of the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum near Penzance.

For Christmas I got two M&S vouchers, so I thought I'd head into Hereford to see what I could find. They usually choose a theme for each issue, and the theme for this one is paper. Hay is very dependent on paper, in the form of second hand books, but we don't usually think much about the paper they are made from. So they start with a history of paper, from Ancient Egyptian papyrus to modern wood pulp (inspired by a French scientist called Rene Antoine Ferchault de Reaumur, from his observations of wasps' nests). Broad Street Book Centre is unique in that it houses a number of different independent bookshops. In fact, there are almost twenty little bookshops in this building.

I took the twenty to ten bus from Hay, and got off just beyond Peterchurch at Poston Mill, where the caravan park is. A little way along the main road, I turned off up a driveway which was also a public footpath, which led up to Poston Lodge. The views of the Golden Valley are fantastic, and this morning there was sunshine with a slight haze in the air. This town is a haven for book lovers in Wales and a real hidden gem. The entire town only spans around 1km but is home to over 20 bookshops! The roof is still being worked on, and when that is finished it will be possible to do more work on the interior of the building. Tudor Brewery is based at Llanhilleth in South Wales. The brewery was established in 2011, and they've been brewing some prize winning ales since then. The toppling of the statue of Edward Colston, the Bristolian who was a major figure in the slave trade, has been all over the news - but there's something similar right here in Brecon. I could spend hours and hours wandering amongst these shelves and I probably spent the most time in this shop out of all the others.

If you’re looking for a specific book, you can bet your bottom dollar that it’ll be here. I found books on the most niche of topics, including a book on the history of my local school. Random! The Story of Books looks so quaint and charming that I fell in love before I stepped over the threshold. Indeed it sums itself up well in the writing above the window: where stories are told and books are made. After a fairly general session last week, this meeting was more focussed on the up-coming climate action on October 7th and the weeks following that. Later in the talk, Martin Griffiths said something quite staggering while talking about Leonardo da Vinci - when Leonardo was born, it is estimated that there were only 7,500 books in the whole of Europe. During his lifetime, the printing press was invented (or rather, pinched from the Chinese, along with paper which made printing much cheaper) and when Leonardo died there were 30 million books in Europe. The Church wasn't going to be able to keep control of that outpouring of knowledge. It's a beautiful building - the part to the right is older, with the rounded middle and the rest of that wing added in 1837. The views of Llangorse Lake (which is part of the 3,000 acre estate) are gorgeous. It's also very obviously a family home, so it was very generous of them to let visitors in to wander everywhere - especially as some of the carpets are white, and they'll need a good clean now! Upstairs there are several school photos of boys of the family at Malvern College.Since Friday, the machine has charged 99p for every cash withdrawal - this is a flat rate, no matter how much or how little money is taken out.
