About this deal

The book suffers from a semi-common JF fiction problem of the characters acting weird just to fit the plot. The 20-yr-old instantly bonds with his landlord in one day and starts snooping around the neighbors yard to save squirrels, the Animal Hospital girl instantly bonds with the guy, the "evil" crow with the cool name randomly appears and then totally disappears to advance a weird plot angle...and oh yea, we have this cool cover about a dragon so we'll through in a few bits about them too. It's just annoying. Charlie Bone occasionally suffers from similar problems, but it's better than this. The Peter and the Starcatchers series is a good example of books aimed at the same age group and and actually well-written. The Last Dragon Chronicles is a series of Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels written by Chris d’Lacey. The books follow the exploits of a college student who develops a fascination with dragons.

Someone to Remember Him By: The end of David's first story, Snigger and the Nutbeast. And at the end of the third book, Zanna reveals she's pregnant with David's child. We have reached the fifth book of The Last Dragon Chronicles series and this story might be the most exciting and suspenseful yet as a terrible danger has threatened the entire world and it is up to our favorite characters to save the day again. This is the sixth installment of Chris’s The Last Dragon Chronicles, in which you get to read further about the very exciting world of dragons and your favorite characters. I was very impressed with the world building and the rich dragon culture. We don't even meet any human characters for a while, as we focus on how the dragons live. I find the character motivations and plot points much more accessible than in the first series. As the weather grows wilder and the ice caps melt, all eyes turn from the north to David's daughter, Alexa. She is the key to stopping it... but can one girl save the world from the forces of evil or will she disappear like her father? His first work of fiction was a simple story he wrote as a present to his wife. It would take several more years before the author finally put pen to paper to produce his first full-length novel. Chris primarily writes for children. I reserve the toilet paper rating for the real stinkers, and congratulations d'Lacey, you've won a spot on my rarefied 1-star review list. My daughter, who has the discerning reading taste of a nine-year-old, said she would rate it two stars, citing the squirrels and the botched sad moments, which she thinks may be related to the fact that normal people don't hold squirrel memorials.

Elizabeth "Liz" Pennykettle – A woman probably in her thirties who makes dragons out of clay and sells them at pottery fairs. She made all of the Pennykettle dragons except Golly and G'reth. According to Gwilanna, she happens to have more auma than most other daughters of Guinevere, which is actually because she has icefire. She is the mother of Lucy Pennykettle, wife of the blinded ex-monk Arthur, and landlady of David Rain. According to David, the Fain (the alien species) meant for Liz and Arthur to be his biological parents, but when Gwilanna interrupted this plan, David materialised at age 20 at the "necessary" time. Liz is pregnant with a boy at the end of "Dark Fire" by her husband, Arthur. Gwilanna originally says that the child will not have "dragon" in him, but after the boy manages to refrain from being affected by the dark fire Liz absorbed, her interest regarding the boy piques. The sixth book, Fire World, takes a unique approach to storytelling as it is set in an alternate universe where dragons are the dominant species, and humans are slaves. David finds himself trapped in this world and must find a way to escape and return to his own universe. I certainly didn't hate my time with this book--I did like it. There was just a lot of times where I felt like I was missing something. And maybe I was...from what I gather, these books are set in an already established universe, so maybe there's more world building in other books. I would still like to read more from d'Lacey, but maybe I'll try a different series before continuing on with this one. Aside from the beginning and the very end, the human kid has no point-of-view scenes. He's just a pawn the dragons literally toss around. The baby drake has no point of view scenes, period. The teen dragon is worried about adult things, like losing his honor and courting a female. Not relatable for the target audience, very much. The final book in the series, The Fire Ascending, brings the story full circle as David and Zanna must face their greatest challenge yet. The fate of the dragons and the world rests in their hands, and they must use all of their skills and knowledge to save the day.

Leaning on the Fourth Wall: After main character David goes on a particularly emphatic rant, his landlady Liz soothes him: "David, stop talking in italics. It doesn't help anything." In the end this is one of my all time favorite books, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in dragons or with a love of fantasy touched with a little romance and the convalescent bond of family tieing the book together. Hrrr Durr" said that dragon. If you missed it the first time, don't worry, they'll point this out like 50 other times, because it's very poignant that the dragons are...well, special. In the exciting sequel to The Fire Within, David must uncover the truth behind the mysterious clay dragons. David's quest is to discover the link between the fire of the last known dragon on earth and the icy regions of the Arctic. It's a journey that will change his life forever, a journey that will bring him to the very heart of the legend of dragons and the mysterious ancient secret of the icefire...
