About this deal

He misrepresents the prisoner's dilemma model as being 1) representative of what game theory says about people 2) a model that applies broadly to how people act in most, if not all situations. His characterization of game theory as having a dark view of people having to screw each other over -- upon which his entire premise from part I rests upon -- derives from this misapplication of the prisoner's dilemma.

What Curtis is suggesting is, firstly, that these ideas are all related in an essential way. The essence extends into numerous academic disciples, as part of our intellectual gestalt. Then he is suggesting that those who have political and economic power have taken up these ideas and models, and are using them to direct policy in inappropriate ways. This is dangerous (as you seem to understand perfectly well), as the actual outcomes are highly unlikely to match the intended goals. And indeed he spends some time looking at the undesirable and unintended consequences of these policies.

it does seem that the crazy sci-fi movies about computers taking over the world weren't so far off.

Until then, the novel moves slowly through the lives of the lazy inhabitants punctuated by the author’s acerbic remarks as he takes pleasure in flaying Zanzibari royal society, both the dignitaries and the slaves. As we begin to sink into the literary torpor of this island, Sakin cleverly awakens us with the arrival of the English. At this moment the novel takes a new turn and introduces us to new characters. The Sultan becomes aware that the English are there to take over his kingdom, Latifa realizes that her life is empty, and that Sundus is in love with her. Game Theory is applying a superimposed model over what is actually going on in any given situation." It is not clear if Sudanese writer Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin was inspired by Freud, but the theory reminds us of the story of his novel’s protagonist, the castrated slave Sundus. Sakin unleashes a tour de force in his novel, La princesse de Zanzibar, recently translated from Arabic to French by Xavier Luffin. Along the way, Sakin also gives us a love story between a slave and princess, a story of sexual pleasure between the castrated and the mutilated, and the story of two beings who thirst for freedom though not for the same reasons. Why? Because they were acting in their own self-interest. It is very tough to campaign on a platform of tax increases or spending cuts, and most politicians aim to gain power (and thus control), not to govern effectively. Note that spending increases also amounts to increased government involvement in the economy -- control.Russian students with pensions from the Academy of Fine Arts came from chilly St. Petersburg and its strict educational routines to the carefree atmosphere of sunny Rome, where they lived with only minimal control from the bureaucrats. Some members of the Russian community of artists were recently emancipated serfs, hailing from quiet provincial parts of Russia (Vasily Raev, Anton Ivanov) or Little Russia (Ivan Shapovalenko). It was these artists who enjoyed the atmosphere of liberty in Italy to its fullest. “In the joyful captivity” of Italian life, Russian art students found themselves in a unique cultural space. Curtis ends part two with the observation that game theory and the free market model is now undergoing interrogation by economists who suspect a more irrational model of behaviour is appropriate and useful. In fact, in formal experiments the only people who behaved exactly according to the mathematical models created by game theory are economists themselves, and psychopaths. Well, Curtis needs to learn Game Theory from at least a principles level before making a judgment. Smith's Invisible Hand model is a general one for all markets, with a few adjustments for market frictions and failures. The Prisoner's Dilemma is a highly specialized model that applies to specific situations such as arms races, advertisement spending, and oligopoly pricing. How many other examples does it fit? Incidentally, the Austrians are not crazy. The Austrian Business Cycle Theory focusses on the Fed, so what they have to say about the crisis tends to make a lot of sense compared to the Neoclassical types, however they usually completely ignore derivatives markets. The Post-Keynesians likewise occupy a fringe position within the field, and they are like the flipside of the Austrians in that they focus only on the derivatives and ignore the Fed.

The alliance with France had disastrous consequences for Saxony. Out of the 20,000 Saxons who were mobilised, only about 1,000 came home. Furthermore, as a result of the new division of Europe, sealed at the Congress of Vienna in 1814-1815, the kingdom lost 58% of its territory and 42% of its population. In the absence of its king (who was restored to the throne in 1815), Saxony was governed by a Russian governor general, Nikolai Repnin-Volkonsky. For children to build their own capacity to make positive change, they need to feel empowered. Exploring other people’s stories helps them make sense of the world and gives them confidence to express their own thoughts and opinions. The closing minutes directly state that if Western humans are ever to find their way out of the "trap" described in the series, they would have to realise that Isaiah Berlin was wrong, and that not all attempts to change the world for the better necessarily lead to tyranny. It is intellectually lazy for you to claim that there is a counterargument to what I am saying in a work I haven't seen or read. I could very easily have said that it is a waste of time for me to debate you until you have read _Origins of Virtue_ by Matt Ridley. Instead, I pointed out that he cites Robert Axelrod's work using the repeated version of the Prisoner's Dilemma to show the evolution of altruism. As a true Romantic poet, Holderlin dreamt of a time when the sun of freedom would shine on his own country as well. Because the idea of the homeland (“Heimat” in German) had great significance for Romantic artists, this exhibit features an entire section devoted to it. You blame Greece for the banking crisis? It's not an isolated incident. Greece is just a bellweather of a larger problem in the Western financial system." This was one of the few parts of the film I found educational, but anyone who implies that there is some sort of collusion between psychiatrists and economists has not met very many economists. Economists generally look down upon all other social sciences as not being mathematically rigorous enough. One of my main critiques of economics is that it doesn't collaborate enough with other fields. There is work being done with psychology (behavioral economics), political science (political economy), and sociology (economic sociology), but I am not aware of any collaboration with psychiatrists.
