Our walk created space for interesting conversations about the legacy of apartheid and how South Africa still values whiteness, masculinity and heteronormativity. It was the start of something valuable. But we had some reservations. A need for disruption This species is an egg scatterer and continuous spawner. They’ll lay eggs on the mops every day for a few days, weeks, or months. Egg Separation That’s because some rainbow sharks sometimes try to assert their dominance over smaller fish, but are less likely to do so with ones their own size (little bullies). To counteract this, place other fish in your aquarium first and introduce your rainbow shark last. This makes it less likely that your shark will see the aquarium as his territory. The water level should be low, and flow kept gentle for good results. A primary rainbow is reflected by the water, and the reflected light produces a reflection rainbow. Reflection rainbows do not mirror the primary rainbow—they often appear to stretch above it. Big fish have a habit of eating little fish. Any tank mate that is large enough to swallow one of the other fish whole should be avoided. Most schooling fish stay pretty small, so it’s best to choose similar-sized tank mates. Ghost Catfish, also known as Glass Catfish, are extraordinary schooling fish celebrated for their unique translucent bodies, giving them an almost mystical appearance. These captivating creatures inhabit the rivers and lakes of Thailand and Indonesia. Visible light is only part of a rainbow. Infrared radiation exists just beyond visible red light, while ultraviolet is just beyond violet. There are also radio waves (beyond infrared), x-rays (beyond ultraviolet), and gamma radiation (beyond x-rays). Scientists use an instrument called a spectrometer to study these invisible parts of the rainbow. Fish that do not receive adequate vegetation while young may have their growth stunted and fins that aren’t as brightly colored as they should be. So, for a group of 7, 3 males and 4 females and so on. Rainbowfish are generally peaceful, community fish, so they can easily be mixed with other tropical community fish, again, provided their water quality requirements are compatible. Between two and four weeks of age, the fish will have grown to somewhere in the ½ inch to one-inch range. It can take several weeks or even months for them to reach their full size. Schooling fish normally do not due well with rainbow fish because most of them also like to swim near the bottom. One exception are barbs, which have been known to cohabitate peacefully with rainbow sharks.
