About this deal

Titan Sunflowers grow to reach about 14 feet tall in good growing conditions. The flower at the top of the main stalk is often about 12″ wide but can reach up to 24″ across. This variety of sunflowers takes quite a while to reach their gigantic height, usually taking about 110 days (3.6 months) to reach maturity after planting. 6. Pike’s Peak sunflower

Take advantage of trap crops like onions and squash to draw pests away from your Mongolian Giant sunflowers. Deer may also be interested in them before they really get big, so be on the lookout for nibbled leaves and add some kind of physical barrier so they can’t munch the top of the plant right off. One of the reasons I love growing sunflowers is for their seed head harvest. Unfortunately, I share this preference with birds, slugs, squirrels and deer. Needs a period of pre-chilling. Mix seeds with moistened peat moss and place in plastic bag. Seal and place bag in an area where the temperature is around 60°F for 2-3 days. Then place in the refrigerator for 30-90 days. After pre-chilling, place seed on sterile seedling mix and cover lightly. Germination may take up to 30 days. Each sunflower will need plenty of room to get as big as possible, so make sure you choose a spot that can accommodate them. They do best with around 1 to 2 feet between each flower. These should be planted in spring soon after the frosts have passed, but because they’re fast growing, they’re one of the best choices for late plantings in mid to late spring. ProCut Peach Kong Giant Sunflowers grow to reach about 16 feet tall in good growing conditions. The flowers are about 10″ wide. Kong Sunflower plants take about 80 days to reach maturity after planting. Planting tall sunflower seeds Known as the common sunflower or the Russian Mammoth, this giant sunflower variety is a low-maintenance beauty. This monster grows between 9 and 12 feet in height, with flowers as wide as 14 inches across. They should be planted in moderately fertile soil, in a sheltered place. The seeds should be planted 6 inches apart in the springtime after soil temperatures have reached 50 degrees and the danger of frost has passed.

On the flip side, the hungry critters return when the flower heads start turning to seed. Use bags or netting to protect the flower heads. Or let them dine.

Plant these giants in full sun. All sunflowers need at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day and more is better. But giant sunflowers use the sun’s energy to fuel their massive growth, so the more hours of sunlight the plants receive the more robust their growth.
