About this deal

Another specialized brush head is the Intercare brush head which is more compact than the standard brush heads, and may be more comfortable for people with smaller mouths. They claim that it reaches between teeth and hard to reach areas better than the larger brushes.

The ProtectiveClean series also includes the 4500, 5100 and 6100. Note there is also a 4500 which does come with the travel case and two brush heads instead of just one. This is actually the cheapest brush in the ProtectiveClean range and the one we rate as best value for money, all things considered. The 6100 is a step up offering the same 3 mode options as the 5100 but also included 3 intensities for each mode: low, medium and high. Which means you can mix and match modes with intensities, theoretically finding the perfect brushing program for you. It also comes with 2 W2 Optimal White brush heads. You can use just about any Sonicare line brush head with the 4300, and we tested several varieties from the 2nd series (G2, C2, W2) to the 3rd series (G3, C3, W3) and found all of them to be excellent. The Gum Care (G) brushes are considered the softer, sensitive brushes. C stands for Plaque Control and is the one for general cleaning. W stands for Whitening. If you are looking for luxury in a toothbrush, then this is the one for you. The DiamondCare Smart (HX9903/43) gives almost the same feeling of clean as the 4300, but it also includes more modes, more intensities, and an app with live coaching! You pay for all the added features, but you get a beautiful toothbrush that will do a great job cleaning your teeth for years to come!

This is very cutting edge and does work. However, Sonicare toothbrushes offer a similar thing, with less prominent marketing and actually, in my opinion, is implemented better from a user perspective. The handle is so light that you can use two fingers to move the brush around. Two minutes of brushing goes by effortlessly, and there is no gum pain or discomfort. Even our tester with sensitive teeth gave high praise to the gentle yet strong feeling of the Sonicare’s cleaning action. Some extra life is achieved by Sonicare I believe via the quieter and possibly more efficient motor as well as the automatic power off feature, something Oral-B does not have. Which is the most innovative? Typically Sonicare brushes last for 2 or more weeks. 3 weeks is the average, with some lasting as long as 5 weeks between charges, and that is with twice daily use. The main feature this brush offers, which is why it is so much more expensive than any of the others, is the “smart” coaching feature with the app.The next model in the Sonicare line up is a one-off. There is only one model that gets the “ExpertClean” moniker, the 7300 (HX9611). A normal clean lasts for 2 minutes and you should spend 30 seconds cleaning each of the 4 quadrants of the mouth. Most Oral-B and Sonicare brushes have both timers built in. The 30 second pacer is a pause in the brush head motion that in turn changes the sound emitted from the brush.

One such independent study was completed by Cochrane in 2020 and they report that there is some evidence that oscillating technology used by Oral-B is more effective. Both are better than using manual toothbrushes. Pitchika et al published the results of an 11 year study in 2019. They proved that powered toothbrushes were effective in reducing the probing depth for people with gum disease. This is the distance between the top of the gum and the tooth – a smaller gap indicates better gum health. They also found that people using electric toothbrushes retained more teeth.

The reason I believe that Sonicare is the best quality overall is because of the feel and performance in hand. Sonicare, to me at least feel more robust and premium, the plastics look and feel stronger and the overall experience is that more effort and attention to detail has been put into the product. Charging is done using the included induction charger which plugs into a wall outlet. One complaint we had for most of these brushes is that the charging cord is a bit short and this one is only 100 cm (40 inches). Electric toothbrush charging test results Stepping up to the DiamondClean Smart line will give you 5 modes each with 3 different intensities. We think that this is way more than you will use, but you do have lots of options. For example, you also have to consider your technique – how you brush with an electric toothbrush. Both types of toothbrush need a different technique to manual toothbrushes. The lower intensity setting would be good for new users of the brush or those with sensitive teeth; although it does come equipped with a 2-week break-in period which slowly increases the intensity automatically to help new sonic users get used to the vibrations. We disabled this feature (instructions are in the user manual) as all of us had been using electric toothbrushes before.

ProtectiveClean | Philips Sonicare Compare our ProtectiveClean | Philips Sonicare

Clinical studies such as this onesuggest a marked difference in the clean offered by the oscillating rotating brush compared to the sonic option. With the more premium Genius 9000, you get the handle, multiple brush heads, a charging stand, a brush head storage compartment, a travel case and smartphone holder. So now you see how confusing this is. The DiamondClean and DiamondClean Smart are not the same brush, and once you add the “smart” behind the name, the price basically doubles. We also have separate buying guides on Oral-B brush heads and Sonicare brush heads that explain the difference between the brushes. Generally speaking, Sonicare brushes have a more clinical look and feel to them. Many of them are a matte white with very mild/soft colour accents on the power buttons and occasionally a rubber grip. This high-end model also comes with brush matching technology which automatically senses which brush head you have attached and then changes the mode automatically. For example, if you have the W3 (whitening) brush head, the brush will automatically switch to Whitening mode. You can override this option by manually selecting the mode you want. The Sonicare equivalent to the Pro 3 3500 is the ProtectiveClean 4300. It does compete well and is a good alternative, but for superior value, Oral-B is the winner.
