The witch roused Samuel, who then prophesied the death of Saul and his sons. The next day, according to the Bible, Saul’s sons died in battle, and Saul committed suicide. The publication of “Malleus Maleficarum”—written by two well-respected German Dominicans in 1486—likely spurred witch mania to go viral. The book, usually translated as “The Hammer of Witches,” was essentially a guide on how to identify, hunt and interrogate witches.

Only you can determine that. I know that’s vague, so here’s a few ways to look for witches marks on your skin and body: How is it possible to sum up the awesomeness of Lafayette in a few words? So wonderfully and charismatically played by the late Nelsan Ellis that he escaped his book counterpart’s fate and was rescued from death at the end of season one, Lafayette brightened up the small town of Bon Temps with his fabulous style and his deep love for his friends and family. Lafayette also possessed a lot of power and was adept at using magic when he needed to. Evelyn Poole fromPenny Dreadful In the north of England can be found one of our world’s most mysterious places: Pendle Hill. Surrounding this hill are a number of villages that in the early 16 hundreds came to be known as a hotbed of witchcraft. For years rumors had told of witches hiding out in the woodlands surrounding the hill. In secret these real witches of the north would gather to cast spells and even commit murder. So in 1612 authorities finally decided to come down hard on this alleged witchcraft. Soon to catch their attention was an old woman called Elizabeth Southerns, known to locals as “Old Demdike”. After all if you’re in a preschool or classroom you probably don’t want to have to draw 30 witches yourself!

Glue on a small pom pom to the top of the nose as a wart. You can choose a pom pom colour to match the nose or something darker for added contrast. Massachusetts wasn’t the first of the 13 colonies to obsess about witches, though. In Windsor, Connecticut in 1647, Alse Young was the first person in America executed for witchcraft. Before Connecticut’s final witch trial took place in 1697, forty-six people were accused of witchcraft in that state and 11 were put to death for the crime. Extra nipple: an extra nipple in the Burning Times meant you were a witch; if you have an extra nipple today, you can claim it as your witch’s mark Carefully cut out the witch template and the centre of a paper plate using scissors. The paper plate should still have a decent rim round the edge of it to create a wreath shape. These are some of our favorites and with each one you’ll also find some ideas for how you could use it.We made several noses. A couple of green ones, and one similar to Emma’s skin tone so it looks more natural. In Southern Maryland is the small town of Leonardtown. With a population of just three thousand there is nothing especially unusual about it, apart from it supposedly being haunted by the ghosts of real witches. According to local legend it all began in the winter of 1697. It was a particularly harsh winter, the town gripped by a vicious snow storm. Blizzards were not unknown to the community. But this one was somehow different, colder and longer lasting than any in memory. Driven mad by such conditions, witchcraft was blamed. The scapegoat, a local woman by the name of Moll Dyer. A beautiful young healer, she had long been part of the community. Our paper bag witch craft is easy to make and kids can use it as a puppet too, perfect for acting out those spooky stories! In the mid 17 hundreds there was a Brazilian woman called Ursulina de Jesus. Virtually nothing about her is known, but according to surviving court documents she was a witch. On finding out her husband was having an affair, she put a curse of him, causing him to go sterile. Now forever unable to have children, he turned her into authorities. In the blink of an eye she was found guilty and sentenced to death, burned in public like so many others accused of being real witches. She might be the only woman in history ever executed for the crime of “Removing a man’s virility”. 2: Old Demdike

One of the most famous witches in Virginia’s history is Grace Sherwood, whose neighbors alleged she killed their pigs and hexed their cotton. Other accusations followed and Sherwood was brought to trial in 1706.As far as history is concerned, the first witch in Ireland was called Alice Kyteler. Unusually for a 13th century woman, she was married four times, outliving each husband. A notorious figure she was known locally as a ruthless money lender. Along with her second husband she was accused of murdering her previous spouse. So when that husband passed away, and then her next one died also, things were looking grim. She then sued her former step son for money and found a new husband. When that man died, his children accused her of poisoning him. In time rumor spread she murdered them as an offering to the devil, who she had secretly worshiped for decades. A satirical article (supposedly written by Benjamin Franklin) about a witch trial in New Jersey was published in 1730 in the Pennsylvania Gazette. It brought to light the ridiculousness of some witchcraft accusations. It wasn’t long before witch mania died down in the New World and laws were passed to help protect people from being wrongly accused and convicted. Book of Shadows Early witches were people who practiced witchcraft, using magic spells and calling upon spirits for help or to bring about change. Most witches were thought to be pagans doing the Devil’s work. Many, however, were simply natural healers or so-called “wise women” whose choice of profession was misunderstood. Before long Bishops were accusing her of being a witch and communicating with demons. They pushed for a formal trial. But before that could happen she disappeared. Some say she fled the country and escaped, but in truth we just don’t know. 3: Ursulina de Jesus In Virginia, people were less frantic about witches. In fact, in Lower Norfolk County in 1655, a law was passed making it a crime to falsely accuse someone of witchcraft. Still, witchcraft was a concern. About two-dozen witch trials (mostly of women) took place in Virginia between 1626 and 1730. None of the accused were executed. Are Witches Real?

A proud Welshwoman (by way of Mumbai, judging by her accent) who lived in a kettle, Fenella was the baddie of Wheelie World. Like the Wheelies themselves, Fenella’s method of getting about—appearing and disappearing out of the ground—was a workaround by creators Cosgrove Hall, to save them having to do labor-intensive animated walk cycles. It all adds to Fenella’s sense of chaos. Quite genuinely scary, her permanent rage at anybody having fun or being happy makes her one of the most stressful characters to appear on children’s TV. Samantha Stephens,Bewitched Lafayette went through a lot of heartache before he found love with Jesus, and was initially rather put off by Jesus’ heritage as a practicing brujo. However, it was Jesus who encouraged Lafayette to embrace his own power and start to explore witchcraft and magic before, inevitably, it all went rather drastically wrong. Marge Simpson and Patty and Selma Bouvier,The Simpsons, Treehouse Of Horror VIII As you’d expect from a show named Coven, there are a great many excellent witches in American Horror Story season three (Cordelia, Fiona, Myrtle, Queenie…) but in honour of the real-life Louisiana voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau, and in honour of the glory of Angela Bassett, this memorable guest role had to feature. She’s the mighty high priestess, after all. Elizabeth Woodville,The White QueenColoring or painting is always an activity that we recommend as it’s easy to set up and something that kids normally enjoy too.
