About this deal

Built on the banks of the Moray Firth, Castle Stuart Links has already hosted 4 Scottish Opens, its thrilling changes in elevation and ‘infinity greens’ make for exciting play. By taking advantage of these options, golfing in Scotland can be an affordable and memorable experience. With a wide range of courses to choose from and reasonable green fees, you can enjoy the rich golfing heritage of Scotland without breaking the bank. I am fortunate to be a friend of a member and played as a guest, we enjoyed great hospitality in the clubhouse before setting off, with a fine meal and a beer to calm the nerves. The course is often referred to as ‘Carnasty’ due to its brutal finishing stretch of holes, particularly when the wind is up. The 8-time Open host has seen some of the most memorable championships in the tournament's history, most notably Frenchman Jean Van de Velde’s meltdown on the 72nd hole in 1999. Most recently (in 2018), Francesco Molinari bested Rory McIlroy and a rejuvenated Tiger Woods to take home the spoils in another eventful affair! My requests to Scottish Golf fell on deaf ears. In fairness, they were trying to roll out the World Golf Handicap system at the time so I wasn’t high up their ‘to do’ list. Visit Scotland had an online brochure which I could have printed out but I heard rumblings that it didn’t include all the courses, and it wasn’t in the most user-friendly format for my needs.

I was quite keen to include a journey time guide - so if you were trying to get from Troon to Dornoch in a day you would know what you were letting yourself in for! A couple of hours on Google maps was time well spent and Val produced a lovely looking table that sits at the side of the map. Donald Trump currently owns two golf courses in Scotland – one in Aberdeen and one in Turnberry, located in South Ayrshire. Additionally, he is in the process of developing a third golf course in Aberdeen. In total, Donald Trump has two golf courses in Scotland. ConclusionMuch like Askernish, the experience is the adventure, the remoteness, the feeling of being up against the elements. I don’t want people to come here expecting a top class facility as this isn’t possible in this remote setting; what they will find is a simple course in a wonderful setting with enough quirk and charm to offer up some great fun. Out on the course, things were a lot less friendly with temperatures near freezing, however the sun was shining and I was soon on my way.

However, golf has been played in Scotland in some form since the Middle Ages and the game has often been tied to the country's royalty. Mary Queen of Scots, one of the first women to play golf, notoriously played at St. Andrews only a few weeks after her husband's funeral. Those traveling to Scotland should consider partaking in a round or two, especially on one of the historic traditional courses, which can be found both in remote areas and within the cities.Val is a master of her art and proved to be an absolute godsend, She patiently took me through the process of producing a map. The first step was identifying all of the golf courses in Scotland. That would be an easy one, wouldn’t it? There would surely be a list somewhere. Ah… It is a moot point how much of Harry Colt’s great Eden course really remains following work by Donald Steel and this mini Old Course is undergoing some more revisions, but it still finds sufficient favor to get a rise. The quintessential simple Scottish links is playable, really well-maintained, and impossible not to enjoy. 73. Stranraer Stranraer, Galloway – UP 1 Secondly, when we visit courses, we make ourselves available to talk to the people there. We’re not secret shoppers. We are accountable.

As with any Open course, the condition is fantastic. The turf here, as at nearby Panmure, is unusual in that is slightly peaty, not the sandy links soil of others. The course always surprises me in its compactness – on the television, it looks so open and grand, however in real life, it feels so very tight, especially in the height of summer with the wind up. Having completed his quest to play the top 100 golf courses in Scotland, he’s now aiming to play every Open Championship course (he’s currently at 11/14). Most will plough on up the M74 without stopping, but those who do will be richly rewarded - at a great price. Remote and beguiling with outstanding coastal views. Barely 5,000 yards, but gorse, blind holes, water hazards, and elevation changes give it teeth. It pains us to drop it down as it has done nothing wrong, but the panel verdict was that it was a little too punchy in the top 50 last time.

STAY & PLAY

Glenbervie is a high-caliber parkland characterized by lush conditioning, first-rate bunkering and good variety among the holes. A course that divides opinion, and feels like it always will be. The views over the Auld Grey Toon are glorious, and the course is undoubtedly fun and playable.

I played Elgin Golf Club with my best mate, and due to my poor planning, we’d played another round in the morning.Highlights are sprinkled throughout but few will leave anything other than thrilled by the quality par 3s at the 4th and 13th as well as the two-shot 9th and 14th. It has been said that the owner wants this venue to host a major golf championship one day, what has been achieved at Trump Aberdeen makes a good case for it to be so. A moorland-clifftop with breathtaking views out to sea taking in Kintyre, Cumbria and Ireland on a clear day. It has only one par 4 over 400 yards and two under 300 yards, along with compact greens. The regular breeze keeps things interesting. The magisterial links is the perfect blend of strategy, history, and occasion. There are people who say those latter two elements do not deserve to be included in a ‘course’ ranking, but they are inextricable aspects of the Old, just as much as the views around the turn are to Turnberry’s Ailsa.
