Oh, one final thing: This box also has all the chaos beasties as well. New Chaos Furies (yea!) and Raptors are also in the box. The player with initiative needs to decide first how his wild dice will be used (if at all). This makes for an interesting dynamic around who actually gets first turn. The first expansion for Warcry come out not very long after release. The “ Monsters and Mercenaries” book came out 7 September 2019, not very long after the initial release. This expansion was focused on adding a few extra allies, big monsters and other elements. Those rules are purely optional and very focused on campaign gaming (so no rules bloat yet). Crypt of Blood definitely keeps the torch burning. With an excellent selection of miniatures, an easy-to-follow beginner’s guide, and all the other gubbins you need to get started with Warcry, there’s not much to dislike in this box. The only real mark against the new Warcry starter set is the dreadful paper gaming mat, but everything else in the set is pretty superb – especially those magnificent Crimson Court models. This is not a game for uber-competitive players. This is not going to be a big competitive tournament game. It is not going to be a substitute for Mordheim fans.

The dice aren’t particularly exciting, but they’ll get the job done (and there’s also absolutely loads of them so you needn’t worry about losing one or two under the sofa). The cards and tokens are as Warcry collectors will expect: good-quality, clear to read and easy to understand at a glance. Watch your step, though– the trees bite. The campaign system is by far the thing I am most disappointed with in Warcry. It had so much potential, but I feel like it is quite a letdown. The Warcry Battleplan cards have a set of Deployment, Victory and Twist cards. These cards are the same as those in the Warcry Starter Set. The campaign system is quite robust for Warcry, but people really crave something more in-depth. A seriously detailed Mordheim-Esque supplement would sell like hotcakes.

The runemarks you can see is like keywords, indicating that only fighters with that runemark can use the ability. Crypt of Blood has a lot going for it: two highly-desirable and otherwise near-unobtainable Underworlds Warbands (now upcycled for use in Warcry), some smashing new bits of scenery, and a comprehensive guide to the Warcry system. This is, undoubtedly, the best way to get into Warcry currently available. It’s a shame, then, in a set this good that Games Workshop cheaped out so hard on its paper gaming mat. Warcry: Crypt of Blood Starter Set Review – Introduction I am more concerned about the “fun” of the game and not so much with perfect balance. I very much like to know what is the optimal choice, but in-games against real-life opponents I shy away from the obnoxious/overly broken stuff. The first chunk of the book is given over to the Warcry setting, as well as getting you familiar with the basic concepts surrounding Warhammer, such as building and painting your minis. Players are then gradually introduced to the concepts and rules of play by the way of 7 missions. These missions take you through each aspect of the game, showing you how to set up for a battle each time before gradually building in more rules until you arrive at the final mission and are let fully off the leash to test what you’ve learned.But Red Harvest is designed to be the ultimate Warcry experience, no matter your ability. It gives you literally everything you could possibly need to get started with the game and then gives you a hefty shove to keep you going long into the future. It is your first starter for the Warcry game system and your first expansion rolled into one, with enough terrain to keep the battlefields of your 2,000 point games of Age of Sigmar looking realistic.
