characteristics in favor of bad, unnatural characteristics. There is still some decent natural sharpness evident here and there; skin details are Paramount does not seem to be able to get releases of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles on home video right. The 2012 Blu-ray release had serious flaws and it seems this new 4K Ultra HD release may be worse. Arriving in a 1.85:1 HEVC 2160p (4K UHD) Dolby Vision encodement, the film suffers from serious softness and at times even looks out of focus. There are serious issues with grain suppression, which can be seen really early on, such as when Steve Martin misses the taxi and then is seen getting off the bus – his face looks like wax. This is an ongoing occurrence in the film. In the scene with Martin and Candy in the motel room as Martin begins to get annoyed with Candy, both of their faces started to look very smooth, losing all texture. The application of Dolby Vision brings very little to the image. Colors look about the same as on the Blu-ray and contrast is average at best, actually suffering a bit of crush on nighttime shots of the city and streets, which are the only ones that show a bit of specular highlight ‘pop.’ The Audio as reality sets in and their shared time together becomes more than a necessary nuisance, their understanding of one another grows and their basic

The Final Assessment

For this 30th anniversary Blu-ray, Paramount recycles the same generally satisfying if also somewhat troubled 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode from five years ago. Thankfully, that's not an entirely bad thing since the 1.85:1 presentation offers a definite upgrade over previous releases, showing better definition and resolution overall. A Tribute to John Candy (SD, 3 min): Precisely as it sounds, we get a few comments from cast and crew remembering the great comedy actor. sometimes is) from beginning to end. The image should have been a home run for filmic purity on a format well capable of revealing that; this is a I reviewed Planes, Trains and Automobiles for its 2017 Blu-ray release and have included comments from that review here. The rating for the film and audio is the same. A new rating for the Ultra HD video and Bonus content has been added. The heart of the bonus features included in this release is the over-an-hour’s worth of deleted and extended scenes on a bonus Blu-ray that were recently discovered in John Hughes’ archive. Everything else, other than the Dylan Baker audition, is on the 4K disc and is ported over from the Blu-ray release.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles originally garnered a fair report from me on its video quality in 1080p. So, I wondered what its remastered Ultra HD presentation would offer. Color reproduction is consistent, with primaries like blue and red appearing richer, even a bit more delineated by comparison. Secondary hues, featured in its 80’s period-based story, look great too. During the opening sequence the first thing that caught my eye was that I detected what appeared to be the use of digital noise reduction which smoothed over fine details during the advertising meeting.about bonding and compassion between the most unlikely of friends and amidst the most unusual string of events, and combined with the picture's after the other. It's about coming together, working through problems, and gaining an appreciation for and understanding of the needs of others. It's CELEBRATING ITS 35TH ANNIVERSARY, JOHN HUGHES’ COMEDY CLASSIC LANDS ON 4K ULTRA HD WITH OVER AN HOUR OF PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED FILM FOOTAGE movie that doesn't hide the fact that life has its ups and downs, but it also serves as a reminder of how people must choose to make it through the

In either case, he's the ideal actor to counterbalance John Candy's obnoxiously lovable and eccentrically funny Del Griffith. From the moment we first see that face inside Neal's cab and hear that he's a traveling shower-ring salesman, we know there something a bit off-kilter about him, but we also can't help loving the big lug. He's like the family uncle with all the stupid, juvenile jokes that only a few will laugh at, yet Candy turns the character into a witty and winning personality we enjoy spending time with. This is easily the much loved actor's most memorable performance. The good news is that the end result is nowhere near as atrocious as what was seen in another recent release of a 1980s vintage film, Footloose. Indeed, Planes, Trains & Automobiles displays obvious but the palette never really sparkles or dazzles. This is a fairly flat and muted Dolby Vision grading that does offer improvements over the Blu-ray for signs of wear and tear on Del's rugged old beater of a travel trunk. There's a crispness and clarity about the image, and detailing is still boosted by the

The result is an uneven image that looks nothing like the rich, organic, natural film texture that should be in evidence (and Planes, Trains & Automobiles sounds a whole lot better than a Chatty Cathy doll. For the most part, this is a dialogue film that has little need for to the age and format of the VHS tapes on which the scenes were found." Included are Waiting to Board (Extended), Seatmates
