If you are touring the Alpujarras and visiting the towns of Lanjarón and Órgiva, or planning on doing one of the local hikes... we would suggest staying locally for a night or two... There is a lot to see and do in this area. Average mid-winter temperatures of 15 degrees and sunny days take the sting out of winter marathon training. When temperatures rise in the summer, the cooler climates of the high peaks provide welcome relief to the surrounding heat. Bar Juanmi was our favourite stop, bringing out a plate of fries covered in delicious stew that made us wonder why fries don’t always come with stew on top. Wander through Salado Park Numerous hikes leave out of Pitres and pass through the region of La Taha which includes many smaller hamlets, the Bermejo River, bubbling irrigation canals, waterfalls, and bridges. You will find the two most recommended tours below, but there are also several other outdoor family activities and tours on offer, including rafting, hiking, cycling, or even a Four-Wheel Drive Safari...

A circular walk in the countryside that goes completely around Lanjaron and includes the Arab castle ruins, views from the Tajos de Colorao and the Camino de las Sierras. Take on and summit the three highest peaks on the Iberian peninsular (3,482m, 3,394m and 3,371m), starting from outside Granada and finishing in the mountain village of Trevelez. Approx. 25km/15.5miles, 1,585m ascent, 2,668km descent, max elevation 3,482m (Mulhacen summit). Our first stop is at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in a very attractive town that was once the favorite resting place for famed Spanish poet, Federico García Lorca... the village of Lanjarón. A high altitude point-to-point route summiting all of the major 3,000m summits of the Sierra Nevada. Taken over three days and staying in mountain refuges along the way the length and ascent combined with the altitude make this a real test of endurance. Perfect for multi-day and ultra training. Approx. 89km/55miles, total ascent 5,370m, total descent 4,730m, max elevation 3,482m (Mulhacen summit)The incredibly fragrant landscapes found here have captivated and inspired writers and painters alike since the 1800s. In recent years, alternative lifestyle thinkers, believers in ancient Asian religions, and numerous artisans and craftspeople have arrived and have chosen to make the Alpujarras their home. Safe to say though these villages and the area is unbelievably atmospheric and fascinating. So we think they’re worth spending some time in any which way, whether that’s driving, bussing or whatever. Now, heading to the Sierra's highest peaks, we pass the small village of Pitres and then finally to the world-renowned village of "Jamón Serrano", Trevélez. One of the busiest and most popular villages in the Alpujarras in October... and also one of the scariest is Soportújar. There are more places in Orgiva than Pitres and Pampaneira. Just a thought: have you thought about walking from place-to-place instead of having just one base?From Malaga - take the A-7 motorway (or the older, slower and more scenic N-340 highway that runs parallel to the A-7) east towards Almuñécar, Motril, and Almería. In about 20 minutes after passing Almuñécar and when you reach Salobreña, take highway N-323 towards Granada. Lanjarón is located only 34 kilometers from Salobreña. As you climb the mountains you will pass a dam and a lake on your left. Look for signs indicating "Las Alpujarras" and "Lanjarón". Exit the highway and head towards the right (east).
