About this deal

Although you don't note the cover type there are in fact two versions of the original Chiswick cover: 1. With the sounds of punk, hard rock, pop, experimental, and signs of new wave/Goth/post-punk it is a great record to start with if new to the band and highly recommended for fans of the genre. But not only did they influence punk, but also Goth rock, a style they delved into by the early eighties, but showed signs of earlier. And among this first are others, they were the first British punk band to release an album and tour the US too.

He is, as he says, a “Bowie-fixated, Zeppelin-worshiping Stooges freak” but the Damned’s third album sets the bar for what follows, issuing a challenge to all his other favourites. With this change in personnel, the reigns were loosened, allowing for a blend of different creams to rise to the top of their hypothetical mug, seeing bits of Psychedelia, Metal, and heavier Gothic Rock styles fused into their formula. Their first album, title ‘Damned Damned Damned’ was released early the following year and is considered a staple in British punk. Title track ‘Machine Gun Etiquette’ features much harder and chaotic instrumentation akin to Lemmy Kilmister’s Motorhead, as well as an apocalypse style riff which falls in and out of the spotlight throughout. The title track amps up the energy even further, Scabies beating the drums within an each of their life on this whirlwind punk rocker that flies by in the blink of an eye whilst somehow incorporating a stomping take on the Rock And Roll Part Two riff.

Featuring Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon on clapping duties due to the nature of both bands recording their 3 rd albums at ‘Wessex Sound Studios’ at the same time, it offers exceptional talent throughout, despite Strummer and Simonon maybe not being on their preferred instruments (The Hands™). Opener ‘Love Song’ is written primarily by singer Dave Vanian and offers a rare insight into his lyrical capabilities.

The Damned – Machine Gun Etiquette Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

Noise Noise Noise and Liar are not as experimental, and are typical punk songs, but not in weak terms at all. Machine Gun Etiquette” was by a different Damned to that which made 1977’s “Damned Damned Damned” and “Music For Pleasure”. Machine Gun Etiquette' (great and suitable album title) is the peak of this band's talents, with the pop hooks sharper than ever AND the punk tracks sounding more natural too.In the Stalinist world of punk rock, the Damned stood out as dissidents, refusing to toe the party line from the off. It is noticeable at this point of the album that Dave’s voice as taken on a deeper tone to it that would show on later works. Mixing a number of styles into a short number of songs, it shows the uniqueness of The Damned as oppose to a great number of their counterparts. The song, split into two parts (first slower and latter faster), captures almost everything about The Damned; the pop sensibilities and humor, yet punk attitude and feel with a hint of their future sound making for an excellent finish to the album.

There's still the quirkiness (ahem, 'These Hands') that hints the band might end up heading in a very different direction in the near future, though nothing is overtly 'gothic' at this stage - just a hint of the perverse in a similar fashion to say, The Doors. Mostly it's laudably ambitious, but "Smash It Up (Part II)" just seems to lay out the coattails for the New Wave stragglers.

Scott Rowley of Classic Rock magazine, reviewing the 25th Anniversary Edition of the album, defined it as "a riotous, ballsy rush of an album [. Second record Music For Pleasure flopped and the band entered a period of turmoil, nearly breaking up as a result. With the title track providing the rationale for getting the Damned back together (plus nabbing the Saints' bassist), the rest of the album is back to gleeful basics, chaotic punk heavy on doomy mood. The singles that appear on the album are “Love Song”, “I Just Can’t be Happy Today”, and “Smash It Up”.
