About this deal

Yet again you may want to consider emulating the PS2 version of this game instead due to the current state of the game and its fan patches. At a basic level, conversion-smith Hijinx has opened out the field of view to accommodate a 16:9 presentation, and used original PS2 artwork assets in their entirety - little or no work appears to have been carried out to ensure they look good when rendered in HD.

New voice actors were brought in to re-record dialogue from both games, directed by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who had previously provided vocals for various soundtracks in the Silent Hill series. If you wish to be unblocked, you must agree that you will take immediate steps to rectify this issue. It favours a more traditional storytelling approach over its predecessor's all-pervasive symbolism, but it still knows how to wrong-foot its audience where it matters - the fact that Silent Hill itself doesn't show for almost half its run-time is one of my favourite tricks, making the eventual arrival of its hellish streets a perversely comforting reunion. Silent Hill 3, in contrast, is a direct sequel to the first Silent Hill game, centering on Heather Mason, a teenager who finds herself entangled in a plot to revive an evil god. The Silent Hill HD Collection, a compilation of the high-definition remastered video game ports of Silent Hill 2 (2001) and Silent Hill 3 (2003), spent more than two years in development.

Remarkably, reading in data from the hard drive appears to impact frame-rate during gameplay, resulting in a perceptible dip in performance when background assets appear to be streaming into memory. No matter how engaging these games still are to play, there’s no escaping the fact that the games on this disc are significantly inferior versions, and for Konami to fail at publishing enhanced versions of such old games is a total embarrassment.

Silent Hill HD Collection is a 2012 video game compilation of remastered video game ports of Silent Hill 2 (2001) and Silent Hill 3 (2003) developed by Hijinx Studios for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. But some well-running fan patches making this game a good experience while improving the once XBox port. Even if the gog Silent Hill 4 release came out of the blue we still have hope for a SH2 (especially through Enhanced Edition as we will see later on) and SH3 release as well.

Not that it would bring much excitement to play Silent Hill while being in the supermarket checkout queue. Unlike the North American release, the PAL and Japanese releases have an extra Making of Silent Hill 2 disc featuring various behind-the-scenes materials, interview with developers, Konami game trailers and more. While the basic concept is the same as in the previous entry, the game is set in a part of town that was unexplored in it, and the weapons and enemies are mostly new as well. So much about these games holds up today, and even playing them on this collection, so much genuine brilliance to shine through to remind the world how horror games used to look in their glory days.

While newcomers won’t notice the missing visual elements, such broken audio is tough for anybody to forgive, while old school fans will be left feeling insulted by what a significant downgrade the “HD” version of Silent Hill 2 is. The release date was later pushed back to March 2012, slated to be published alongside two other upcoming installments in the franchise, Silent Hill: Downpour and Silent Hill: Book of Memories. The updated visuals were a point of contention among reviewers: some wrote that the absence of fog in the remastered Silent Hill 2 revealed previously hidden textures and technical limitations of the game to its detriment; the updates to Silent Hill 3, which did not depend on the effects of the fog as much, were generally better received. Please keep in mind that this guide was written at a time in which PS2 emulation was not included in RetroArch/libretro yet. Also new is the ability to change the standard "survival horror" (character-dependent) controls into the more widespread, 3D (camera-dependent) navigation.
