The lens features a new 7-Element 4-Group arrangement of glass to try and minimise the effects of chromatic aberration by using low dispersion lens coatings and improve sharpness of the image from edge to edge and top to bottom. Being a single chip device also means there are no issues with panel alignment, which can be a slight issue for the 3-chip machines from Epson, Sony and JVC. On portable projectors, battery life is an additional factor that may influence how long the item lasts. Most portable models use lithium-ion batteries rated for between 500 and 2,000 charge cycles. Silence mode is called liked that because it disables the pixel shifting tech and makes the projector literally work as an 1080p unit. The 3D and HDR modes are auto enabled when the appropriate content is detected. As for the rest of the modes naturally the Bright mode can produce the most brightness as we measured 2870 lumens which is very close to it’s theoretical performance and is intended for very bright rooms. The BenQ TK800M features a very curvy design that is very characteristic of BenQ projectors as from the first look you can understand this is one of their models. Featuring a size of 13.9 x 5.31 x 10.71 inch (353 x 135 x 272 mm) and weight of 9.26 lbs (4.2 kg) this projector is definitely made with portability in mind and you will understand why from many of the features it comes equipped with. In general it is a bit bigger than many Full HD projectors but this is normal for almost all 4K projectors either it be native of pixel shifting ones. In recognition of the TK800’s target market, BenQ has included game and football picture modes. The former is definitely useful, reducing the input lag and delivering a more responsive gaming experience. The latter is less successful, boosting the colours and the processing, resulting in an image that appears too artificial.
In HDR, the TK800M has great light output, too. On my 0.9-gain screen I was able to measure just over 50 foot-Lamberts (fL). To put this in context, a good light level in a dark room is around 15 fL, while you want that up around 30 with ambient light during the day. The extra brightness of the BenQ allows for some nice HDR highlights that really pop while using the projector in a dark room. The sharpness of the image is undoubtedly helped by the single chip nature of this projector, which means there are none of the alignment issues found on three-chip machines. However that does mean that the TK800 has to use a color wheel, and this can result in rainbows for certain people who are susceptible to the effect.
Why is BenQ TK810 better than BenQ TK800M?
The lower zoom and throw ratio can make placement a bit more problematic than before especially if your space is not big enough. Things also don’t get any easier as there is no lens shifting in this unit which means that if you don’t line the projector straight you will have to use Keystone correction to straighten the image something that we always suggest you avoid doing as Keystone always degrades image quality and we don’t want that. There’s a typical set of connections at the rear, that includes two HDMI inputs: the first is HDCP 2.2 compliant and should be used for any 4K/ HDR sources, while the second is HDCP 1.4 and can be used for high definition. There’s also a PC/VGA input, an analogue audio in and out, a 12V trigger, an RS232 serial connector, and two USB ports. In the case of the latter, the first is for service updates, while the second can be used to power other devices. Also the TK800M is missing a Dynamic iris which could help improve things in this regard but models that use one are much more expensive than this one. Everything has a price and while this unit excels in other areas it’s price doesn’t allow it to perform better here and this was more or less to be expected.
Pro 1) Affordable Projectors With HD and 4K: BenQ offers some 4K UHD home projectors in a price range usually reserved for lower-resolution XGA projectors. They even sell a 1080p portable projector with 2.1 channel Bluetooth-enabled 10W speakers built-in. By the way, it’s always good to compare 4K vs 1080p projectors, so you know which resolution works best for you. Other projector components that may require upkeep or replacement include air filter assemblies for air-cooled projectors, lens motors for models with automatic zoom and lens shift, and Wi-Fi dongles for models that use external wireless modules. Over time, cheaper projectors may experience more color aberration as the light source dims with age. To maintain a bright image and lifelike, vivid color, make sure to keep up with the maintenance of your projector. It also helps to store the unit someplace relatively cool and free of dust. Letting the projector cool off between uses can sometimes prolong the life of the lamp and optics assembly. You’ll get the best image using an actual screen, but a white wall will suffice.
HDR content looks considerably better compared to SDR on the BenQ TK800M which is its primary purpose. Color accuracy sports visible improvements, lowering the average Delta E to a more acceptable 3.7 compared to around 4.8 in SDR. Contrast also gets a nice bump since HDR mode gets to utilize the high brightness threshold of the lamp in this projector. Despite not actually using a native 4K panel it’s still capable of highly detailed images, and is also very bright – making it perfect for less than ideal conditions such as a room with white walls or big windows. Also expect excellent motion handling, which is great for gaming, and it has a low input lag which is also good news for gamers. (The BenQ even supports 3D, although you will need to buy the glasses separately.) Testing was done with a Photo Research PR-650 spectroradiometer, a Konica Minolta LS-100 luminance meter, and CalMAN 2018 calibration software. HDR patterns were from Diversified Video Solutions’ UltraHD/HDR-10 Test Pattern Suite. SDR patterns were from a VideoForge Classic generator. I used my 100-inch Stewart GrayHawk 0.9-gain screen. When testing, a numerical DeltaE value is used to indicate how close to perfect a measurement is. A DeltaE of 1.0 or below is considered perfect as any difference from reference is indistinguishable. 3.0 or lower is excellent and it is hard to see a discrepancy without scrutiny, while above that value any variations become more perceptible. The Cinema picture mode was used for all testing as it had the most accurate grayscale and color. The TK800 uses a 4K 120Hz Red, Green, Blue and White (RGBW) four segment colour wheel with colour coatings to produce more light output and coverage of the Rec.709 HD colour standard. BenQ also claim it improves motion performance from the TK800 which should make it popular with sports fans. Let’s see now how the unit fares in the input lag tests. Our measurements showed an input lag of 43.2ms which is very good for gaming but not exceptional. For any kind of casual gaming it will be more than enough but if you take your gaming sessions very seriously then there are other projectors that offer better input lag for such occasions. If a projector can't be positioned so it's vertically aligned with the screen, the image is distorted into the shape of a trapezoid rather than the desired rectangle. The TK800M provides automatic vertical keystone correction that solves this problem, but I strongly recommend avoiding any keystone correction if at all possible, because it reduces the sharpness of the image.Factors that affect how long a projector will last include frequency of use, environmental conditions, and how it’s maintained. Fortunately, most modern BenQ DLP projectors use low-maintenance sealed mirror assemblies and long-life LED or laser light sources. The BenQ TK800M strikes a beautiful balance between practicality and capabilities. This model is considerably cheaper than laser projectors, but its performance in 4K HDR movies or games is comparable up to a certain degree. The winning factor in this product is its very high brightness threshold which boosts contrasts and vibrancy compared to what a typical projector can do. The other big feature is support for High Dynamic Range, specifically HDR10. Thanks to BenQ’s Auto HDR Colour Rendition technology, the TK800 can deliver HDR with greater brightness and contrast range than SDR. There are also image optimisation features designed to bring out all the detail in a 4K source.
