About this deal

When not needed, gather up the dangly cord into a bundle (do this for each side) like an extension cord. You will not notice it as you walk, but it is easily released if needed. I use a twist tie that is kept attached to each cord. This is the section where we break down all the different factors we used to base our opinions as well as what to look for when choosing a waterproof hiking poncho. Waterproofing Recently as the natural waterproofing qualities thin out, I also dab on a full rubberised waterproofer (that you'd use to re-seal a tent groundsheet) to key areas like the cuffs and zip shield. In the UK we have Gear Aid's 'Seam Grip TF'. So which would I choose for my next trip? That entirely depends on the situation. T he shell and the poncho have different pros and cons. If cold is a factor, I would want the shell. Warm weather—give me the poncho. There may be nothing worse than walking on a cold rainy day and getting wet. We carry a little extra weight to alleviate that threat. We also carry nothing made out of cotton, but that’s a different subject.

Stylish? We can’t say so. Fully covered? Very. The 7 Best Rain Ponchos of 2023 Rain Poncho Comparison Table peregrina2000, why not get your hands on a recent iteration of the Altus and see what you think? If it really is unacceptable you can always return it.Take all the pros of Sea To Summit’s classic Tarp Poncho, then subtract all the cons, and you’ve got the Ultra-Sil Nano. Granted, most ponchos don’t offer quite the same degree of coverage for your lower body (depending on the length) and most don’t fully protect your arms either, but the considerable space and weight savings they offer make them a lasting favorite for thousands upon thousands of outdoors enthusiasts of every discipline. Water Resistance We also love the simple yet effective snaps on both sides of the Ultra-Lite2. If you’re in a serious storm with rain-blown wind, these snaps allow you to snug the poncho up at your sides and armpits, providing the most secure barrier possible. When you’re in a lighter rain or scattered showers, you can leave as many snaps undone as you want for maximum ventilation.

Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 Poncho Reviews - Trailspace

Nylon is very similar to polyester in its properties in that thin strands are woven together to create a durable and lightweight fabric ideal for outdoor clothing. While the strands of nylon are waterproof (they don’t hold moisture) a fabric made from woven fibers will need some kind of treatment to make it fully waterproof. PU stands for polyurethane which is a type of plastic that will bond with synthetic fibers to create a waterproof layer. Ripstop Nylon is basically a special type of weave which makes the fabric extra resistant to tears and if there is a puncture it won’t easily turn into a gaping hole. PVC It's very sturdy and definitely waterproof. Not cheap, sadly, and not ultralight (500g) but good quality. If the weather is really bad I use it combined with rain trousers or gaiters and a hat. That is of course not necessary for a light summer rain, but really nice on days when it's constantly cold and wet. Thanks to everyone for all of the responses. One thing that people really haven’t commented on, except for @davebugg, is the material used to make the different ponchos. My old Altus has a much “silkier” feel than the Decathlon, which feels almost plastic-y. I assume that they are all waterproof, but would the type of material make a difference in how clammy or sweaty you get when wearing it for a long time?

One big problem with these cheap waterproof ponchos is that they are not designed to last more than 1 or 2 times which is not good for the environment. The issue with using them for hiking is that they have no breathability and are incredibly flimsy much like a plastic bag you carry shopping in.
