About this deal

The delightfully-named Clarice Bean is an offbeat, quirky little girl who wears a dress covered in planets. I particularly enjoyed how flawed the teachers were as characters, as well as the acknowledgment that other children can be extremely snarky! The writing made me smile several times and actively giggle once so I would imagine the girls would be in fits of giggles. The stories follow middle schooler Clarice Bean and her challenges navigating the complex ethical, social and philosophical questions children deal with at school and at home. Child’s tenure will run until June 2019, which will mark 20 years since the post was inaurgurated by Quentin Blake and since Child published her first book.

In fact, Clarice Bean is starting to feel just like her favorite heroine: Ruby Redfort, schoolgirl detective. Utterly me is all about getting through a school project- a book exhibit (and be unscathed by Mrs Wilberton), solving the mystery of her friend; Betty Moody disappearing (of course Clarice Bean presumes the worst) and the missing school trophy (did Karl Wrenbury really steal it? Her second book in this series, Clarice Bean Spells Trouble was shortlisted for the 2005 British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year. Our resources are crucial for knowledge lovers everywhere—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in.Personally, I found the Ruby Redfort interludes like a less realistic Alex Rider, but I'm not nine years old. The love between the two children gently suffuses every story, while the quirky humour and mischievous behaviour ensure that it is never depicted in a sentimental manner. As the title suggests, the endearing young narrator of Child's (Addy the Baddy) refreshing tale knows what she wants, but hasn't quite worked out the details.

Child’s titles, particularly those in the ‘Charlie and Lola’ series, appear at first glance to be toddler-like statements, yet they also capture the ‘inner child’ that most adults (if they are being honest) will recognise in themselves.

Review: I can see how this would be appealing to children, however from an adult point of view, the book does not have any challenging vocabulary, and has a lot of adult jokes which would not be understood by children.PreS-Gr 2-Child's exuberant illustrations bounce off the page both literally and figuratively in this delightful pop-up title that invites kids to imagine the bed of their dreams.
