Spider-Man: The Video Game is a step up in functionality compared to some of its predecessors. Developed and published by SEGA, the side-scroller beat-em-up followed all the familiar conventions of the genre. But there was one thing that set it apart from many other Spider-Man titles: its roster of playable characters. Marvel Super Heroes for the CPS II arcade hardware was a result of the success of Capcom's fighting game X-Men: Children of the Atom. Josh Keaton voices Harry Osborn, who is playable in his own bonus storyline, where he dons his father's Green Goblin gear after his death and investigates a conspiracy involving Oscorp. Though the time travel storyline is very well told, with brilliant cut scenes and voice acting, the gameplay is far too focused on combat.
