About this deal

Even without Tablet mode, Windows 11 works quite well on touchscreens, whether they’re built into tablets, laptops, or even desktop monitors. When faced with a touchscreen device, these commands will help you maneuver through Windows 11. (The term swipe simply means to slide your finger along the screen.) Authors and recognized Windows experts Ciprian Rusen and Woody Leonhard deliver a comprehensive and practical resource that provides the knowledge you need to operate Windows 10, along with a few shortcuts to make using a computer feel less like work.

The Properties dialog box for your network adapter appears. This dialog box has seven tabs that let you configure the adapter: DON’T assume the new apps will work best for you. Many Windows 10 adoptees rush to the new Mail, Calendar, People, Photos, Groove Music, Movies & TV, and other apps, assuming that they’re shiny and new and must, therefore, be pretty darn good. Some aren’t. Most people will do better with an online mail system. The People app is a joke with a hundred better alternatives, and Windows 10’s Photos app isn’t in the same decade as Google Photos. Microsoft's offers change from time to time, but the general trend is down — prices are going down, fast, and it won't be too long before most online storage approaches free.

At this point, Windows 10 treats your newly joined wireless network as a public network, the same as one you'd find in a coffee shop or airport. You won't be able to find or access your other networked computers until you create a Homegroup. Press Alt+PrintScreen (PrtSc): This keyboard shortcut shoots the active window and copies the image to the Clipboard. Service. Microsoft continues to treat Windows 10 as a service rather than a product. And, just like any other service, Windows 10 changes constantly. Don’t be surprised if Windows unexpectedly changes its look or features. Edge. Microsoft Edge has been replaced with a new, rebuilt Microsoft Edge, complete with a new icon. Other than the new icon, the new Edge behaves much like its predecessor. Tweak the Windows UI so it looks and feels just the way you like it. Change the theme, adjust the icon size, or turn the new OS into a dead ringer for Windows 7.

Apps. Microsoft updates some of Windows 10’s apps on a daily or weekly basis, adding new features, removing unpopular ones, and fixing problems. The latest update brought many new icons to Windows’ built-in apps. The updates arrive automatically through the Microsoft Store app. If you log in to a different Windows 10 computer using the same Microsoft account, you have access to all your OneDrive data through the web but, surprisingly, not necessarily through File Explorer. In fact, if you look only at Windows File Explorer, you might not even know what data is sitting in your OneDrive storage. Swipe from the bottom or top edge for app commands: App commands are revealed by swiping inward about an inch from the bottom or top edge. Swiping from the very top to the very bottom of the screen lets you close the current app. File Explorer is the Windows 10 application for handling and managing files. To move, copy, delete or rename files, start by opening File Explorer.

Apps: Microsoft updates some of Windows 11’s apps on a daily or weekly basis, adding new features, removing unpopular ones, and fixing problems. The updates arrive automatically through the Microsoft Store app. That spares you the trouble of searching for the latest updates, it also brings surprises: Sometimes your apps no longer look and behave like they did the day before. Everything you learned about Metro apps disappears in Windows 10. All the time and effort you put into setting up and learning those tiled Metro apps in Windows 8/8.1 won’t help you very much. Microsoft didn’t like them, either. Although you see occasional vestiges of Win8 Metro apps in Windows 10’s apps, by and large, all the old Windows 8 app stuff is dead. First, a word to the wired crowd: If you've chosen to connect a computer to your router with a cable, plug one end of the cable into your computer's network port. Plug the cable's other end into one of your router's network ports. (The ports are usually numbered; any number will do.) Press PrintScreen (PrtSc): This keyboard shortcut shoots the entire screen and copies the image to the Clipboard. The free storage is there, regardless of whether you use your Microsoft account to log in to Windows, and even if you never use OneDrive. In fact, if you have a Microsoft account, you're all signed up for OneDrive.

No Tablet mode. Windows 11 no longer includes a Tablet mode, which made Windows behave differently on touchscreens. Instead, Windows 11 looks and behaves the same on both desktop PCs, laptops, and tablets.Select the View tab. The View tab — look for it on the Ribbon — offers different way to view files. Rectangular portion of the screen: Select Rectangular Snip and drag slantwise over the area you want to capture. Various parts of the screen: Select Freeform Snip and drag hither and yon to capture various parts of the screen.

Windows 10 offers a few different ways to take a screenshot of all or part of the screen and save it to the Clipboard: On the calendar, select the day on which the event is to occur. To go to a different month, select the down arrow or up arrow in the upper-right corner of the calendar.Windows 10 also includes virtual desktops, a way of creating several separate desktops. You can align one project’s windows and programs on one desktop, for example, then switch to a second desktop to place windows for a separate project. Snapping Windows To Do This. . . Don’t get freaked out by the tiles. No doubt you’ve heard that Windows 8 messed up Windows, but the tiles in Windows 10 are very different from the tiles in Windows 8. If you used Windows 7 gadgets, think of the new tiles as souped-up gadgets, and you won’t be far off the mark. If your internet company didn't do it for you, plug a cable from your broadband modem's LAN or ethernet port into your router's WAN port. (If your router and modem live together in one box, you can skip this step.) Turn on File History. Unless you’re going to store everything in the cloud, you need to tell Windows that you want it to keep “shadow copies” of files, so you can restore older versions. (Companies that provide cloud storage have this ability built in.) Windows 7 has File History turned on by default; in Windows 10, you must turn it on yourself.
