About this deal

Neither of these partners in slug crime, live in sufficient numbers to make a significant difference to slugs in our gardens. Many years ago I heard of a similar home made slug killing ‘soup’, made by drowning slugs in a bucket of water and pouring the resulting ‘soup’ onto your plants.

As the nematodes invade the slug, it will stop feeding, so your plants are safe and will burrow underground to die. The product is less effective on cloggy clay soil, which has not been worked and/or has become waterlogged. They lay a batch of about 80 spherical pearly-white eggs into crevices in the topsoil or sheltered under stones. If your seeds do not seem to have germinated, it is possible that slugs have devoured the emerging seedlings underground. If you start applying nemaslug early in the season, you can target the young slugs growing under the ground.

Mr Fothergill’s sources our seeds and plants from reputable suppliers, ensuring that they meet the highest of standards. All my articles and videos, available free, are funded by my teaching and sales of award winning bumblebee nest boxes, solitary bee boxes, and wormeries .Barriers, thought to repel slugs, include rough or sharp textured mulches and substances thought to be distasteful or strong smelling. These green wonders shoot up, not out, saving space while promising a harvest that could make any green thumb boast. However, if because of dense foliage this is impossible, after application wash them off into the soil with some extra water. Thanks for the message and there as some species of nematodes that in lab conditions may affect bees (there are hundreds of species of nematodes) but the ones used in Nemaslug have not been shown to have any effect and are safe for bees. It is a larger slug than the grey field slug and scientists found that this slug was able to trap invading nematodes by increasing its shell size.

Slug collars - plastic rings with a lip to make crossing it difficult, placed around individual plants such as lettuce. Garden or kitchen waste can be broken down over time in a compost bin or heap to produce crumbly organic matter that can be used as a mulch, soil conditioner and a constituent of potting compost. The idea was that the slugs would taste/smell their dead ‘relatives’ and this would deter them from eating your plants! I use Nemaslug every spring before the slugs get very big and start breeding, it’s usually fairly sure to rain frequently so I don’t have to water the garden so much! This toxin is particularly effective against the grey field slug, whilst results with other slug species, larger slugs, adults of certain slug species and snail species are more variable. This biological control offers a pesticide free alternative solution to killing slugs, instead of reaching for a bottle of slug pellets. Apply Nemaslug Slug Killer 6 weeks before harvest, when the tubers are most likely to be eaten by slugs.

They will chew holes in ripening Strawberries and Tomatoes, and also eat Potatoes, which are of course grown underground, so you may be unaware that such crop is even being attacked. Early potatoes usually escape damage; maincrop potatoes should be lifted as soon as the tubers have matured if the soil is known to be slug infested.Nemaslug® is a perishable, living product, so it is sent out fresh by Royal Mail 1st TRACKED post, but they are fine on the doormat while you are at work. As of March 2021 there is only one type of slug pellet approved for use in gardens, those based the active ingredient ferric phosphate. Parasitic nematodes seek out suitable hosts by swimming in the thin film of water on soil particles.
