In addition to gameplay changes, the traditionally linear Call of Duty story structure saw an update as well. The game’s branching storylines, dictated by the actions of the player during Strike Force missions sprinkled throughout the campaign, changed the game’s ending by tilting its US/China Cold War one way or the other. The fates of a number of key characters are fluid as well, encouraging multiple playthroughs for fans who want to see it all.

After aiding Jonas Savimbi's UNITA rebels against Angola's Marxist government, Mason and Hudson recover Woods from a barge on the Cubango River, subsequently encountering a Nicaraguan arms dealer named Raul Menendez among a contingent of Cuban military advisers. After a lengthy firefight, the trio are rescued by Savimbi. It is revealed that Menendez is responsible for holding Woods captive after torturing and killing his team.

Completing the Strikeforce Mission will yield more positive outcomes in the campaign.
