I’m certainly not an intellectual, I know what I know because I always read a lot. I didn’t top out those test scores for officers candidate school and engineering school because I was an intellectual, it was because I had knowledge from reading a lot and excelled at all things math. Moving up and down the west coast, with six different grade schools, I devoured books in the school and local libraries, because it gave me knowledge. By the age of six, became absorbed in math like many with dyslexia, because math is absolute. Dyslexics grab on to absolute, because so few things are absolute. I aced the GCT/ARA/MECH for the service, not because I was an intellectual, but because I had a lot of knowledge.Adam Sisman`s definitive biography, published in 2015, revealed much about the elusive spy-turned-novelist; yet le Carré was adamant that some subjects should remain hidden, at least during his lifetime. #TheSecretLifeOfJohnLeCarré is the story of what was left out, and offers reflections on the difficult relationship between biographer and subject. More than that, it adds a necessary coda to the life and work of this complex, driven, restless man. Dyslexics don’t all develop the same gifts, but they do have certain mental functions in common. Here are the basic abilities all dyslexics share: The gift of mastery develops in many ways and in many areas. For Albert Einstein it was physics; for Walt Disney, it was art; for Greg Louganis, it was athletic prowess. A Paradigm Shift By the time I got to the part of the book where the dyslexia correction method is outlined – and I will just make it clear here that this part of the book is not a self-help book, you do have to have somebody else help, you cannot teach yourself it – I had a fire under my feet and just needed to get onto a Davis Dyslexia Correction Programme as fast as possible. I got hold of a facilitator that morning and by that evening we were having our first talk over Zoom outlining the programme. I remember crying my eyes out in the car driving to my girlfriend’s house in a complete emotional rollercoaster. Not only was I about to embark on mastering the English language and other parts of my dyslexia disorientation, a fundamental belief that I’ve held all my life has just been smashed to smithereens. I really wish I had heard about this book years ago but I’m glad that I’ve heard about it now. A system that uses models to represent difficult-to-grasp words is claiming remarkable success in treating dyslexia ... 97 per cent success rate and is used in more than 30 countries'

But, what about all those words that we don’t have images for? Words like ‘ the’, ‘ if’ ‘and’ and ‘ don’t’? Around half of all words in every sentence are words we do not have an image for. Try it. Close your eyes and see what image you have for ‘the’. Seeing the letters ‘t-h-e’ doesn’t count. That is one part of mastery. That is what the word ‘the’ looks like. How you pronounce it is another part of mastering a word. There is a third part for mastering a word and that is its meaning. By meaning, I do not mean its grammatical usage. By meaning, I mean the definition of the word that allows me to create an image for the meaning. Reading or writing shows repetitions, additions, transpositions, omissions, substitutions, and reversals in letters, numbers and/or words. The book goes into this in a very nice fashion. Later, it gives an approach used by the institute created by the author to help dyslexics improve whatever skills they're missing and be able to use their skills to handle normal everyday situations. Wouldn’t you love to have the gift of mastery? Dyslexic children have a ferocious need to play and learn, and can entertain themselves anywhere. And, while they do ask questions, they are figuring most things out for themselves. They develop a very low tolerance for failure because, quite honestly, their thinking style has led them to be quite successful in everything young children do before they are old enough to start school. The fact that Ron Davis has clearly made a lot of money, both through the sale of this book and by “franchising” his learning techniques, really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

This program is the weirdest thing – this is working! I have undergone changes that mean I can now understand information in the paper world. It’s possible to be less angry, the feeling is like a freedom! Here we are at the end of the week, and something has worked. It feels like hope is planted in the soil. I will be responsible for furthering my paper understanding – that is no small feat! AJ - adult, British Columbia, Canada - To change our perspective of dyslexia from disability to gift, we must start with a clear, accurate understanding of what dyslexia really is, and what causes it. Doing this will bring out the positive as well as the negative aspects of the situation and allow us to see how dyslexia develops. Then the idea of correcting it won't seem far-fetched. Going a step beyond correcting the problem, we can also recognize and explore this condition as the gift it truly is. Your letter shows that you are intelligent, honest, creative, and proactive. Not many 14 year olds would be reaching out as you have done here. I believe you will do well in life, and wish the best for you. Listening through the opening chapters of the book I could feel it resonating with me – how my world is constructed of me thinking in pictures. This ability to perceive things allows me to process information faster and be more creative. An example of this is my job as an engineer: quite a lot of times I don’t need the computer-aided design software to see the solution or the part in 3-D. I’m quite happy to do that all in my head, and then use the software to illustrate it to other people. This ability has become my super move in quite a lot of situations. The mental function that causes dyslexia is a gift in the truest sense of the word: a natural ability, a talent. It is something special that enhances the individual.

What an amazing week this was for Maryann! She was always full of excitement after spending the day with you. She was so happy with what she had accomplished. She now has a real sense of being able to be successful with her learning. She is bursting with self-confidence. That speaks volumes. You have given her so much…truly a GIFT! Parent Report, Canada - The Davis® approach is a highly effective, non-traditional suite of programs for dyslexia and other learning differences. Davis methods give individuals the tools to use their inherent, natural strengths to overcome specific areas of academic or workplace difficulties. The method was developed by Ronald D. Davis, after a breakthrough discovery enabled him to overcome his own severe dyslexia at the age of 38. Based on his research with other dyslexic adults, Davis opened a center in California in 1982. He continued to explore and refine his methods working with hundreds of clients, and twelve years later, in 1994, published the first edition of his book, The Gift of Dyslexia. What happens then is the obvious. If you don't practice and use any part of your body, it's not going to be as strong or effective when you need it. This child does not need the slow linear thinking approach, so she never uses it. But guess what? Our language depends on such an approach, especially written language. Thus, when the child gets to the point where she needs to read, she will try to use the non-linear approach, and - to everyone's disappointment - it will not work.
