About this deal

The shell consists of three layers: the outer layer (the periostracum) made of organic matter, a middle layer made of columnar calcite, and an inner layer consisting of laminated calcite, often nacreous. [13]

Journal of Paleontology. 76 (2): 287–305. doi: 10.1666/0022-3360(2002)076<0287:LECSSF>2.0.CO;2. JSTOR 1307143. S2CID 130381069. The mollusk's feeding system starts with a rasping "tongue", the radula. The complex digestive system uses mucus and microscopic, muscle-powered "hairs" called cilia. The generalized mollusk has two paired nerve cords, or three in bivalves. The brain, in species that have one, circles the oesophagus. Most mollusks have eyes, and all have sensors to detect chemicals, vibrations, and touch. The simplest type of molluscan reproductive system relies on external fertilization, but more complex variations occur. All produce eggs, from which may emerge trochophore larvae, more complex veliger larvae, or miniature adults. a b Jacobs, D.K.; Wray, C. G.; Wedeen, C. J.; Kostriken, R.; Desalle, R.; Staton, J. A phylogenetic study suggests the Polyplacophora form a clade with a monophyletic Aplacophora. [46] Additionally, it suggests a sister taxon relationship exists between the Bivalvia and the Gastropoda. Tentaculita may also be in Mollusca (see Tentaculites).

Exceptions to the above are the molluscs Planorbidae or ram's horn snails, which are air-breathing snails that use iron-based hemoglobin instead of the copper-based hemocyanin to carry oxygen through their blood. The Museum's collections reflect this diversity: the mollusc collections are the second largest collection by group, with just under 80,000 specimens in the collection. The majority of the mollusc collections are dry specimens: shells, borings and other hard parts. The fluid-preserved collections were mostly acquired for use in teaching, as well as representing some of the soft-bodied forms. Additionally, there are many mollusc specimens in the microscope slide collections at the Museum. These collections have not been organised by animal group yet. The fossil mollusc material is held in the Museum's Palaeontology collections, and a few mollusc collections related to former curators are maintained at the Oxford University Museum of the History of Science.

A "generalized mollusk" [ change | change source ] Anatomical diagram of a hypothetical ancestral mollusc Ruppert, E.E.; Fox, R.S. & Barnes, R.D. (2004). "Mollusca". Invertebrate Zoology (7thed.). Brooks / Cole. pp.290–291. ISBN 0030259827. A striking feature of molluscs is the use of the same organ for multiple functions. For example, the heart and nephridia ("kidneys") are important parts of the reproductive system, as well as the circulatory and excretory systems. In bivalves, the gills both "breathe" and produce a water current in the mantle cavity: this is important for excretion and reproduction. In reproduction, molluscs may change gender to accommodate the other breeding partner.

What is the outlook for molluscum contagiosum?

Gubanov, A.P.; Kouchinsky, A.V.; Peel, J.S. (2007). "The first evolutionary-adaptive lineage within fossil molluscs". Lethaia. 32 (2): 155. doi: 10.1111/j.1502-3931.1999.tb00534.x. The particles are sorted by yet another group of cilia, which send the smaller particles, mainly minerals, to the prostyle so eventually they are excreted, while the larger ones, mainly food, are sent to the stomach's cecum (a pouch with no other exit) to be digested. The sorting process is by no means perfect. [16] Mollusks are an important phylum of invertebrate animals. Most of them are marine animals, which means they live in the ocean. They have huge numbers in-shore, that is, in shallow water. They are the largest marine phylum, with about 85,000 living species, 23% of all named marine organisms. They also occur in freshwater and on land. Molluscum contagiosum is a common contageous viral skin infection that most often affects children. It causes either single or multiple raised, pearl-like bumps (papules) on the skin. It’s a chronic infection, so the bumps may last for a few months or a few years. Livett, B. There is an even sharper debate about whether Wiwaxia, from about 505million years ago, was a mollusc, and much of this centers on whether its feeding apparatus was a type of radula or more similar to that of some polychaete worms. [51] [54] Nicholas Butterfield, who opposes the idea that Wiwaxia was a mollusc, has written that earlier microfossils from 515to510 million years ago are fragments of a genuinely mollusc-like radula. [55] This appears to contradict the concept that the ancestral molluscan radula was mineralized. [56] The tiny Helcionellid fossil Yochelcionella is thought to be an early mollusc [45]

As the head has largely disappeared in bivalves, the mouth has been equipped with labial palps (two on each side of the mouth) to collect the detritus from its mucus. [13] Nervous system [ edit ] Simplified diagram of the mollusc nervous system The phylogeny (evolutionary "family tree") of molluscs is a controversial subject. In addition to the debates about whether Kimberella and any of the " halwaxiids" were molluscs or closely related to molluscs, [50] [51] [54] [55] debates arise about the relationships between the classes of living molluscs. [52] In fact, some groups traditionally classified as molluscs may have to be redefined as distinct but related. [76] Frýda, J.; Nützel, A.; Wagner, P.J. (2008). "Paleozoic Gastropoda".
