Joseph Smith dictated the Book of Mormon to several scribes over a period of 13 months, [232] resulting in three manuscripts. Upon examination of pertinent historical records, the book appears to have been dictated over the course of 57 to 63 days within the 13 month period. [233] According to Smith's account and the book's narrative, the Book of Mormon was originally written in otherwise unknown characters referred to as " reformed Egyptian" [9] engraved on golden plates. Smith said that the last prophet to contribute to the book, a man named Moroni, buried it in the Hill Cumorah in present-day Manchester, New York, before his death, and then appeared in a vision to Smith in 1827 as an angel, revealing the location of the plates and instructing him to translate the plates into English. [2] Most naturalistic views on the origins of the Book of Mormon hold that Smith authored it, drawing, whether consciously or subconsciously, on material and ideas from his contemporary 19th-century environment, rather than translating an ancient record. [10] [11] The book's sequence is primarily chronological based on the narrative content of the book. Exceptions include the Words of Mormon and the Book of Ether. [89] The Words of Mormon contains editorial commentary by Mormon. The Book of Ether is presented as the narrative of an earlier group of people who had come to the American continent before the immigration described in 1 Nephi. First Nephi through Omni are written in first-person narrative, as are Mormon and Moroni. The remainder of the Book of Mormon is written in third-person historical narrative, said to be compiled and abridged by Mormon (with Moroni abridging the Book of Ether and writing the latter part of Mormon and the Book of Moroni).
Events of the Book of Mormon are the focus of several films produced by the LDS Church, including The Life of Nephi (1915), [290] How Rare a Possession (1987) and The Testaments of One Fold and One Shepherd (2000). And it's not as if NTE's attitude is "explanations are pointless," because there's long scenes in Shin that are purely explanations, and at that explanations for things that (to me) didn't really need to be spelled out so much. Meanwhile, the Book of Life is gestured to in the vaguest way possible as if to say it's only meaningful in the application it proceeds to use it on, which is as an idiomatic way to refer to Kaworu's bond with Shinji.

The plot is probably the weakest part of this movie as it really doesn't make much sense or have any real weight to it. These two ghostly spirits make this wager on the young children but I'm not really sure why they do this, or why they even care what these kids get up to in the future. Its also an odd bet because they will both have to wait many many years to see the outcome, and what happens if neither of them marry this girl? surely they could make another simpler wager.
