Art Institute of Chicago, The Fifty–fourth Annual Exhibition of American Paintings and Sculpture, Oct. 28–Dec. 12, 1943, cat. 15.

The American series Shameless features the Nighthawks painting in a late season 11 arc where Frank Gallagher, a petty criminal and conman, pulls off his final heist, stealing the painting and hiding it in his basement. [47] In Nighthawks, no one seems to be interested in communicating with anyone. While the barista seems to be asking or looking at the man with the cigarette, the man does not bother to look at him. There’s not even a visual connection. People are not even looking at other people. This enhances the isolating sensation one gets by looking at the painting.New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, Edward Hopper, Sept. 29–Nov. 29, 1964, cat. 43; Art Institute of Chicago, Dec. 18–Jan. 31, 1965. Starting shortly after their marriage in 1924, Edward Hopper and his wife, Josephine (Jo), kept a journal in which he would, using a pencil, make a sketch-drawing of each of his paintings, along with a precise description of certain Nighthawks is a 1942 oil on canvas painting by Edward Hopper that portrays people in a downtown diner late at night. Hopper depicted light in a realistic manner – this is something we would see if we were standing on a darkened street corner looking in on an illuminated diner. Furthermore, if we zoom in on the figures’ skin tones, we see the effects of the light, which gives them a “washed out” look. The light moves onto the pavement outside, illuminating the surrounding area, but as we move further into the street, it becomes darker suggesting more lifelessness around the diner. The Defining Artworks of 2020,” ARTnews, Dec. 9, 2020, https://www.artnews.com/list/art-news/artists/most-important-artworks-2020-1234578712/edward-hopper-nighthawks-1942, ill. While we cannot say where this cafe is, we can see an easter egg. Look at the red and green buildings on the other side of the road. That building is very similar to the building in the painting Early Sunday Morning painted in 1930. Perhaps this is where the cafe is as well? Who knows, but it is an interesting reference that people often miss.
