About this deal

This is a subtle, ruminative gin and, thanks to its softness, Brighton Gin is also delicious sipped neat, over ice with a slice of orange. Brighton Gin's botanicals include lime, milk thistle and locally grown coriander seeds. It’s also 100% vegan and gluten free! There’s a really rich heritage of brewing and more recently wine-making in this part of the country, but much less so on a distilling front – it’s been amazing to start something new for the city.

Kathy: Ellie was pretty much the first person to hear me banging on about wanting to make Brighton Gin eight years ago and it’s a delight to work with her every day. And the job title? Mainly because of the look on Ellie’s face when we discussed her being Head of Sales! A mutual friend introduced Kathy to spirits specialist Helen Chesshire and together they enlisted the help of three other Brighton residents: Ian Barry, a laser physicist turned distiller, Jonathan Ray, drinks editor of the Spectator, and local entrepreneur Nigel Lambe. For local deliveries in most areas of postcodes BN1, BN2 and BN3, we can often offer direct to doorstep delivery via Brighton Gin bike or van.Enjoy Brighton Gin Seaside Navy Strength in a classic G&T, great for any time of year. We recommend a splash of premium tonic, plenty of fresh ice and a slice of fresh orange or lime to garnish to bring out the citrus notes in the Seaside Navy Strength Gin. Our early distillations were overwhelmingly strong and unbalanced and tasted like loo cleaner! We had a minor fire in the early days that needed to be patted out with my oven gloves, which then started smouldering themselves. My colleague Ellie then had a health and safety fit and rushed out to buy fire blankets and extinguishers! At the beginning we had a vast list of botanicals we wanted to use, but through the process of distilling and tasting them individually we whittled them down to our final recipe. Our Brighton Gin Seaside Navy Strength Gin has dropped anchor for good time gulls and buoys everywhere! Kathy: There’s a couple of factors influencing the gin boom – one is the interest in provenance, quality and localism which was led by craft brewing. What’s happening in craft spirits is following that. Here at Brighton Gin we run the tours ourselves! The same small team who work in the distillery all week also run the tours on Saturdays, which is just one of the things which make our tours so special! Due to this we can only do distillery tours on a small scale which means that any no-shows or last minute cancellations present a real issue for us.

Exceptionally smooth mouth-feel, warmth from the juniper, followed by gentle smooth citrus and distinct orange and lime notes Brighton Ginis made with 100% organic grain spirit, juniper, fresh orange and lime peel, locally-grown coriander seed and milk thistle. Each bottle is filled, labelled and wax sealed by hand, the distinctive blue/green colour being that ofBrighton’s famous seafront railings. Our distillery tour involves a hands on experience of Brighton Gin’s production process - you can wax your own bottle, design and apply your own label and take home your own customised Brighton Gin miniature, too! If you want to give a tour as a present to your loved ones (or yourself!), scroll down further for the link to our gift vouchers! Kathy: We spent a long time perfecting our recipe. It took about two years and was done around our kitchen tables, with many mistakes along the way that I’m not embarrassed to talk about as they’re such a key part of learning. It started with months of experimentationwith different ingredients, combinations, distilling techniques and approaches, and more than one or two accidents along the way (but we lived to tell the tale!) and lots of trying out recipes on fellow gin-loving friends until we finally hit the perfect blend.

The light bulb moment was that (in my experience!) gin is the one drink that lets you get away with it. Brighton is a place that needs to get away with it on a frequent basis, and I thought ta da, the spirit of Brighton – Brighton needs its own gin.At 57% proof, it also holds the juniper flavour better and enhances the botanicals, which means you need less gin in your glass to get that refreshing juniper flavour really pushing through to your taste buds. We only use certified 100% organic pure wheat spirit – super smooth, and without any of the nasties that can give you a sore and sorry head – which we re-distill with juniper, fresh orange and lime peel, locally-grown coriander seed (the first UK commercially grown coriander seed in over 200 years) and milk thistle, which is indigenous to the South Downs and renowned for its kindness to the liver function. It was a fun experience, ideal as a gift or for anyone simply interested in learning about the gin-making process. Beginning with years of experimentation, different ingredients, combinations, distilling techniques and approaches, award-winning freelance broadcaster, producer and presenter Kathy Caton and her team finally found their perfect blend. One which embodies the spirit of Brighton; unusual, playful and fiercely independent. The Gin Guild talks to Kathy about the story behind Brighton Gin.
