About this deal

I will admit that it initially took me a while to regain my footing in the ongoing narrative, and remember all the characters sufficiently, but once I got past that, the story seemed an improvement via accumulation in comparison to the previous volume. I would not say that the character of Miyamoto Musashi has yet gained any true depth – he still comes across as rather flat – but the character gallery around him is starting to make up for it. Also, while there is still a lot of violence (one fight seems to be going on for an near endless number of chapters) there is much less carnage in this volume. And perhaps it allows hints of character growth for Musashi as well. But the story runs slowly, much more so than the pace I'm used to by now in shonen. It's only mildly interesting, the poor rural Japan filled with prematurely wrinkled, ugly faces standing in stark contrast with Takezō's unusually lovingly drawn character. The typical feelings of alienation, mistrust and difference between the protagonist and his community are emphasized here by the differences in both physical and behavioural depiction of the various characters.

Since they're primarily visual you would think that means comics would have an easier time of giving readers Great fight scenes... And yet I find it even more difficult to come up with any Great fight scenes from comics than I can from books. This is because its even more of a pain in the ass to maintain a kinetic flow and pace that a good fight scene needs with still images with word bubbles than it is with just words. If you're a good writer or storyteller there's at least a chance that the prose of your fight scene will have good rhythm and beats. Superhero comics are especially disappointing in this regard, and may explain why the writers and artists typically overcompensate with absurd feats for superheroes and super-villains. I'm a geeky male in my early twenties so I've seen my fair share of shonen anime, but the typical drawn out nature of most of the fights in the sub-genre have wiped out any desire of mine to see if the original manga versions of, say, Dragon Ball Z and Bleach have better paced fights (well, that, and their sheer daunting length). Before I reveal the reason why I decided to give the second volume of VIZBIG's edition of Vagabond 4 3/4 stars some caveats: I haven't read much manga period (looking to remedy that somewhat this year) and most of what I have read were rom-coms, and while I have read a lot of comics in the past two or so years the fact remains I only became a regular reader of graphic novels two or so years ago. slam Dunk Vagabond Vol. 37] (in Japanese). Kodansha. Archived from the original on December 20, 2014 . Retrieved December 1, 2014. There’s a lot of violence in this volume, some of it quite bloody. There’s also a brief sex scene with female nudity–this is a “mature readers” title.

It's a tough one to judge and I reserve the right to change my opinion in next volumes ;). The art is 5 stars, easily - it's great, brutal and soulful in turns, realistic and highly aesthetic at the same time.In 16th century Japan, Shinmen Takezou is a wild, rough young man, in both his appearance and his actions. His aggressive nature has won him the collective reproach and fear of his village, leading him and his best friend, Matahachi Honiden, to run away in search of something grander than provincial life. The pair enlist in the Toyotomi army, yearning for glory—but when the Toyotomi suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the Tokugawa Clan at the Battle of Sekigahara, the friends barely make it out alive. Like Slam Dunk, I must admit some fight scenes dragged on a little longer than they needed to and while I enjoyed Sasaki Kojiro’s arc, I was also desperate for it to end! Kojiro is another enigma within the Vagabond universe, but I must continue to express my love for Takezo. Sorry, Kojiro. Douresseaux, Leroy (October 27, 2010). "Vagabond: Volume 33". Comic Book Bin. Archived from the original on April 24, 2023 . Retrieved May 10, 2023. Matahachi’s on the run because of the arson thing, and a chance encounter allows him to also reinvent himself as the respected warrior Sasaki Kojirō. His sections of the story are tragicomedy, as he keeps having good intentions, but the flaws in his character prevent him from following through in a crisis, and we watch him make excuse after excuse for doing less than he ought.
