About this deal

A display board with a bare tree ready to be covered in leaves can function as an effective whole-class reading record. Each time a child completes a book, they add a leaf with their name and the book, building into a wonderful display.

My next reading journal will be a place where I can make notes as I’m reading, of the things I’m learning, questions I have, quotes or ideas that stand out, and concepts to explore further. Quite often what I personally do is somewhat different from what I would like it to be. As a part of an honest and transparent approach, here is my reading diary routine: This can be an incredibly enjoyable session, with children gasping aloud at how much they’ve achieved and excitedly recalling their favourites. Over the last year, I’ve really embraced the idea of using a reading journal. As I’ve explored the role of a book journal in my reading life, I’ve discovered that there are so many ways to use reading journals.

Then we need to collect our impressions from the book. Typically this is a separate document where we add our impressions per chapter. We can use the words we have chosen to visualize, and then see if we can understand in the hindsight what we read from the visualizations. If there are important facts within our reading, we can add them as flash cards, using a dedicated document or a table. When we draw important questions for further analysis or important understandings from our reading we also write them down, maybe in a different color. It may be important to add to the main table the percentage of comprehension so that we may decide to reread the book later on. This is my favorite option, and not just because I made them for sale. For me, a pre-printed reading journal ensures that I actually continue to write in my reading journals. Much as I like the idea of a beautiful bullet journal, actually creating one is not something I’ve ever been able to sustain. And for me, that’s the key to book journaling: the forgetting. Or, more accurately: the remembering. Secondly, whether because of issues with their own literacy or trouble finding the time, some parents face a genuine struggle with the task.Secondary Year 6 leavers - Covid-safe transition activities and ideas It's been a chaotic year but Year 6 children still deserve the best ending to their primary journey

Ah, my favorite! This is a new journal project I’ve started this year, and I expect it to be a lifelong collection of journals (maybe even something that will amuse my kids or grandkids after I’m gone?). You have a few options if you want to journal your reading in a digital format, but the main decision here is whether you want it to be public or private (or somewhere in between). Step Two: Go through and figure out where everything in your notebook is. If you are designing your own, make sure to leave a lot of space for redesign if you change your mind along the way.

You could always start a class brainstroming session, to help them figure out what to write in school reading diary. You'd be surprised at how many books children might come up with as suggestions! At their best, reading diaries can be a useful record of a child’s reading – a reliable means of communication between home and school. But the traditional model can bring challenges. For the youngest children, where the emphasis is on parents to fill them in, there are two issues. Firstly, for some parents, completing the reading diary becomes a badge of honour. If you’re thinking about starting a reading journal, look no further than this ultimate guide to book journals. You’ll find book journal ideas, reading journal examples, prompts, and thoughts on why you should start a book log to improve your reading life.
